The Place My Classroom
| The Setup |
On May 29, 2009, Timothy and his best friend Chris came to visit the first grade classes for our Community Helpers Week. There are eight classes so we combined two classes in one room. During his visit, he discussed the importance of being safe in case of an emergency. He also showed the students the different tools they use and described each part of their fire gear. My class was the last group of the day. Before they began the presentation, I noticed Chris setting up a video camera in the back of my classroom. I asked him" Why are you setting up a video camera?" His response was "My wife Kerri wants to see it." After that, I just continued to watch Timothy in front of the class. After a few minutes, Timothy asked the students "How many of you would like to see your teacher wear the fire helmet?" Of course they all wanted to see their teacher wear a big helmet, so I came to the front of the room. As I was standing in the front of the room, Timothy was asking the class to recall the names of the tools he showed to the class. After he elicited responses from the children, he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket. He then asked the students to state what he was waving in the air. One of the children replied that it was a box. After the response, he turned to me and opened the box. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was in complete shock. My fellow co-worker was in the back of the room. She was so excited and was screaming at the top of her lungs. My students were somewhat confused of what was going on. They grasped the concept when my friend stated "Your teacher is getting married!!" This is when the students got very excited. I always thought we would be engaged during the month of July. We're going to Sandals and I thought that's when he would propose. After the proposal, all of my friends and co-workers ran to congratulate us on our engagement. I was on cloud 9. It was the happiest moment of my life |
