Interviewed Apr 2, 2009

"What an incredible job you did. Your photos truly are art work and we feel so incredibly blessed to have our happiest moments captured as beautifully as we remember them. Your modern, yet classic candid style was exactly what we were hoping for, and we know that is so difficult to find... You were the utmost professional, keeping things light when they could have been stressful. We were so thrilled to have found you." - Vanessa Penna (Senior Beauty Editor, Elle), NYC.

What makes you stand out in a crowd?

Despite my youthful appearance and energy, I've been around long enough to seriously appreciate that what I'm capturing is peoples' histories, their emotions. I'm their documentarian. That your wedding photos aren't so much for today as they are for down the road, for the rest of your life, for your children, your grand children, great grandchildren. I'm also terribly creative and love what I do, and get excited capturing art from real life. So when I work, as serious as I am about doing right with the images, I'm joyful, having fun. I'm a wide eyed kid in a candy store when I'm photographing a wedding. And folks sense that passion in me. It may be contagious.

What type of services do you offer?

I do one thing very well and that's photography. I don't try to be all things to all people and wear different wedding hats just to make a buck.

What are some of the hottest trends you are seeing for upcoming seasons?

I don't really go for trends, every breeze that blows my way, but I watch for new ideas out there and integrate stuff that appeals to my aesthetics. Trends will come and go, but "timeless and artistic" is always in style. If something strikes me as timeless and artistic, it does get my attention.

Tell us about the types of packages you offer?

I create customized packages tailored to my clients' needs and wishes. That way the bridal couple can have just what they want and have control over what they spend their money on.

What's your turnaround time?

I work things much differently then most photographers and save the bride and groom a lot of time and effort so that they can have their album within a few months after the wedding. I make it real easy for them from start to finish.

How many pictures do you generally take in a standard package?

Whatever it takes, there's no "one size fits all". I'm there to shoot, so on top of fun, artful portraits, I continually scout for all sorts of photo ops because that's where the real stories are about the wedding day.

Do you offer couples the option of adding "must have" photos to your work?

If they want a picture with Aunt Sally, then yes, I'd like to know that. If it's about a certain image they'd like, that's different. I once had a bride who tore out some pictures from a national bridal magazine and asked me if I could take images like that at her wedding. It turns out that the pictures she tore out were photos of mine that the magazine had published! I took it as a compliment.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I follow select photographers around the country, around the world really. Just a handful. I'm rather discerning, having grown up as an artist myself, so I have a natural appreciation for creativity and talent. So it takes more then the typical to impress me. That's also why I push myself to continue evolving as an artist, and part of that requires being inspired by those rare and great artists.

How about engagement photos and packages?

I offer engagement photos and packages, in fact, all the photography products I offer are popular items that bridal couples enjoy and desire. Everything I offer is of primo quality; I look to only feature the best of the best. I wouldn't offer anything I wouldn't be happy with owning myself.

What are some of the best locations for photos?

I don't go for the typical park scene. Unless maybe there's a carousel or a castle there... I find obscure places as I drive around and keep notes to go back there to photograph and what time of day it photographs best. I like texture and depth for the images, and the setting should give us the mood that we're some place other then a mile from the LIE. Distressed buildings, overgrown ivy, graffiti'd nooks and crannies, mansions, gargoyled walls and rustic barn doors give me that edgy, different flavor I like in my images. We could be in Europe or New England or who knows where by the looks of these kinds of spots.

What are some of the unique and specialty features you offer?

Once upon a time I was working on some images when I realized that this is what I was meant to do: to really craft something awesome for bridal couples who sought that difference in workmanship for their wedding memories. I mean, look around, and there are umpteen photographers in the area, and if you look at their work side by side, it almost all looks practically the same. To me, anyway. I really find it much more interesting and creative to go some steps further and offer something you can't get from every other studio. So I shoot a mixed style using everything I know, I've been immersed in Photoshop technique for the last dozen years, and when it comes to the level of boutique service the bridal couples receive from me where they're treated like family, to the top level items they get, it's as if I was the client and expected nothing less then what I know is the best - and I do it because I'm fortunate enough to be capable of delivering at that kind of level. So why do anything less then my absolute best for them? This is my passion.

How can you make a couple's photos really stand out?

Now that requires an encyclopedia to answer! I've been a photographer for years and years, had art training and dabbled in illustration before that and have put a ton of serious thought and effort into developing my craft as an art, so suffice it to say that everything I know about photography comes into play when I shoot. And I've probably shot about 1,000 weddings by now, so a lot of knowledge and experience comes into play. The couples that hire me all have one thing in common: that they really put their photography as a number one priority so they expect more from me then the general bride does from the typical photographer. Me, I never compromise an image. I do what I know I need to do to get the best image possible. It's all about the image! "Good enough" just isn't good enough for me; I want peoples' jaws to drop! I want my clients to be thrilled. Not just "satisfied", but ":thrilled". Like I am.
