Pails In Comparison: Budding New Centerpiece Trends

by Mia Bolaris-Forget (Staff Writer NYCityWeddings)

When I got married, I finally fulfilled my life-long dream of having an “Island” wedding, albeit a Long Island wedding, but it “was” on a beach, with the whole “beachy” thing as the main theme. And, I even extended the theme to ALL my pre-wedding day plans and parties. In fact, I presented my bridal party their gifts, in a custom-decorated beach pail containing all sorts of summer goodies, like designer sunglasses, sunblock, gifts certificates for manicures and pedicures, etc.

And, it seems, that I may have started a “trend”, as experts now appear to be embracing my “do-it-yourself” project.

In fact, for summer wedding centerpieces, beach buckets are currently all the rage.

Professionals suggest investing in some metal kids beach pails and using your imagination to customize them. They suggest painting them in the wedding colors by first sanding and priming each bucket and then coating it with a water-based enamel. Allow pails to dry overnight and to create stripes or patterns, then section off areas to be designed with tape and paint only exposed areas and remove the tape while the paint is still wet. For monograms and table numbers, use stencils and a pencil to outline the letters or number, remove the stencil and paint. Also, its best to use small planters or pails for small trees and flowers.
