How far in advance do I need to order a wedding gown?

Hi! I'm getting married on 7/23/05. We have basically everything set, except that I haven't started looking for gowns yet. I have looked in the mag. and know the styles I like, but I'm waiting until my mom comes to visit NY, she lives in FL, and is coming up mid-Nov. Does that give me enough time if I need to order a dress??? I know that trying on your first dress is a great experience and I want to wait to share it with my mom, but I just don't want to be super rushed. Am I ok on time??

I ordered mine about a yr in advance... I am sure getting the dress when your mom visits will give you plenty of time...

I think a lot depends on which brand dress you're ordering. Some can take only a couple of weeks, while other designers have a 6 month waiting list.

I went to a shop on Sat and they said it would take 4-5 months. Fitting would start 2 months before the wedding.

I ordered an Eve of Milady dress and they told me it will take about a year to come in.

a year?!? Wow, that's crazy!!! I really like some Jim Hjelm Couture dresses.....I hope they don't take forever to come in.

Also, does anyone know about the sample sales...what sizes are those dresses usually in? Hopefully, I can even get a sample if I see something great, but then I know you have to take the dress with you and keep it clean.

Samples tend to be in a size 10. I am on the hunt for a sample. If you are looking for NYC sample sales, then go to topbutton.com and subscibe - they update constantly.

i think most dresses take approx one month, but add on at least another month to get all the alterations done. but the sooner you start looking the better! i'd say you have plenty of time. i have less than 6 months til the wedding and i still don't have my dress! i'm kinda freaking out now.

mine took 6 months to come in.

ETA: oh yeah & lie to the bridal shops about your wedding day by at least 2 week, just in case

The bridal salons and shops recommend six months in advance. In addition to topbutton for sample sales, check out www.newyorkmetro.com. It's the website of New York Magazine and you can subscribe to daily alerts on sales throughout NYC. This way you won't miss anything. Also if you subscribe to the knot they send out alerts about sales.
