I believe the custom dates back to the times were marriages were arranged and grooms did not get to see their brides until after the wedding just in case she was not attractive enough.

As far as I know, there is nothing religious about it.

I don't think it's religious - just traditional. We aren't seeing each other before. Just because I like the romance of it! But - it does make the picture taking a little inconvenient. And we will miss our cocktail hour. Though I think it will be good for everybody to mingle without us around to congratulate. Either way, I think it works out fine.

I agree with Stef. When we were booking halls and photographers and discussing time frames, they all told us this.

At Jewish weddings it is actually religious tradition for the groom to place the veil on the bride before the ceremony -- so that he doesn't marry the wrong girl by mistake! :)
