Starting a new job...
How do you guys feel on the first day of a new job? What can an employer do to make you feel comfortable? Do you like to jump right in? Or have tons of training?
We have somebody new starting today - and I really want her to work out....I am hoping to start her off on the right foot so that this works out as best it can. Any advice would be helpful!

Re: Starting a new job...
first day of a new job is like the first day of school for me.
Show the girl to her desk, maybe have some supplies already out for her, if your company has those give away stuff like a clock, stress ball, coffee mug give those to her as well.
Ease her into the system of the day, what she is responsible for, who to go to with things, etc...
Maybe sit with her for the first day or two just to make sure she is ok and comfortable, if she needs any training offer it to her or introduce her to someone she can sit and work with.
The first few days take a while to adjust. You want her to feel like a member of the team from day one.
Good luck, I hope it all works out

A lunch invite or let them know where all the good/bad lunch places are as well as the shopping.
A tour of the office with introductions so they can start putting names & faces together. Show them where everything is - coffee, restrooms, coat closet, office supplies, mail room, etc. Show them how to use the phones, set up voice mail, e-mail, etc.

Re: Starting a new job...
I agree with the above. This is what was done for me when I started working for my current employer. I dont think they do this anymore though, and it is too bad.
I was supplied with a free breakfast, orientation, a tour of the building, paid training, a free lunch, and all the desk supplies that I needed to start. I didnt have a computer for a week so my first week was a little boring, but I had a buddy. Someone to show me around, and get me comfortable with the environment.
I have an interview on thursday that I am praying that I get. I hope I receive all the above or something close to that. It is very hard to get comfortable into a new environment, especially since the person that is starting wants to make a good impression on the people in the office.

Re: Starting a new job...
When I was in the H/R dept at my last job the person saw me first. I made sure that the pc was properly working with the email connected.. I also showed the person all around the building.. Bathrooms, Cafes, Atms, Smoke areas if applicable.. Went over what the company offers as far as medical dental, gave the employee the paperwork..
Have someone start the training... I would also invite the person to lunch with me that day.. Even if it was just sandwhiches in the conferenece room...

Re: Starting a new job...
I think lunch is the most important...even if its just bringing her to sit with you in the lunch area...
I personally like to be on my own...but the periodic check in is appreciated

I agree with the lunch invite. There is nothing worse than feeling like the "new jack" and not knowing anyone.
