drinking wine while pregnant... UPDATE ON MY NIGHT

Just a quick question.. I have never had any alchohol during my pregnancy but I am going out tonight with some friends and although I am not a drinker, I am CRAVING a glass of wine or something..
Is this safe? I am reading so many different things on the interenet.
I hate calling my doctor for this, it will make me look bad lol

I'm so funny, I worried and procrastinated all day and when it came time to order something to drink I had my hand on my belly and said " water please" lol
Its not that one glass would cause birth defects it was that I would of felt to guilty knowing this little one was having the drink with me.
Better to be safe then sorry.. I did feel much better though with the huge piece of cheesecake I gobbled down.
Thanks everyone

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

This is difficult to answer b/c alot of these topics about what you can or can't have during pregnancy are subjective, according to whom is providing your prenatal care. Are you a high-risk pregnancy? That might be your first consideration. Also, most doctors will say that anything is fine in moderation, but I think it depends on what you consider "moderation." If you only want a small glass, or even just a few sips, than I think it is fine and will not harm your child. But, I am not a doctor...so, when in doubt....

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

No claud I am not high risk.. and all I really wanted was just ONE glass tonight.. I havent had any alchohol since I was pregnant and I am not planning to have anything else..
I just wanted one little glass later..lol
Could one glass of wine in a 9 month time cause my baby any problems?
Im so nervous about it I think I might stick to water

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

Jodi, like I said...I do not think so. But, I do not know for sure...that's the best I can say. Do what you feel most comfortable with. Honestly, if you're *really* having a craving, I do not think a few sips will cause ANY harm at all...but that's JMO.
Don't beat yourself up over this...I don't think it's that big a deal! ENJOY your evening!!!

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

I will say that my mom drank wine during her pregnancies because during those days doctors said it was fine to have a glass once in a while.

But I am not a drinker at all so this has not been an issue with me at all.
I would call the doctor and ask.

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

I am DYING for wine. I was a big wine drinker to start though..

I haven't had even a sip since I got pregnant. And I have been out quite a few times and just passed it up. Sorry - that's my advice!

I am SURE it's fine...but I have been really cautious.

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

It is ok to have just one. Some people say red is better then white or ziffandael when your pregnant. (I have no clue) You might even find that once you get a sip that it's not what you wanted. BELIEVE ME!! I didn't drink during my pregnancy but I was going to allow myself a 1/2 pint of Guinness on St Patricks Day. I took 2 sips & I was like all that waiting for nothing!! I didn't want it!!

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

I think it depends on who you talk to. I know my GF did not cut out alcohol really at all, she said her doc told her a glass A DAY was fine, I didn't agree with that since alcoholics need a glass a day, lol! I think one glass is fine and you'll probably take a few sips and say blach being that you aren't a wine drinker! Have fun tonight!

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

Ugh, having to give up wine will be so hard for me when the time comes. I love wine!!!

I have a friend who is also a wine drinker and she did occasionally have a sip or two of wine while pregnant - I would say she did this about a half dozen times. Her doctor told her that it was okay to have a little bit once in a while, but nothing like a glass a day!!! That is shocking. By the way, my friends baby was nowhere near a low birth weight. She was a nine pounder!

Probably you wont even want it after one sip since you don't even really llike wine.

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

I think if you are totally craving it, and can't get rid of hte craving, just try taking a sip or 2 first. I know that at the end of a pregnancy, when you're past your EDD, some might suggest relaxing by having a glass of wine.

I'm breastfeeding, and I have a couple of drinks a week, I always put Lyla to bed first, and try to make sure that she won't be up for a while, so that at least an hour passes between having a drink and nuring her again.

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

Why don't you have some sort of Kool Aid or fruit drink that tastes tart to cure your craving?
I'm sure if you had a sip or two, it would be fine but I am such a worrier. I say go for some Kool-Aid.

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

I will say that I was recently at a wedding and a pregnant women was drinking wine and I couldn't believe it. I thought she was nuts.

If you are truly craving it have a sip and be done with it. I know that since I went on this stupid GD diet I have had a few cravings and if I totally try to ignore them I just want the stuff more and more and more until it drives me nuts. A little bit goes a long way to help you get rid of a craving.

Re: drinking wine while pregnant

My sister only had one craving once during her whole pregnancy. She wanted a peice of cheesecake w/ strawberried and a cold beer. In the middle of the night by BIL had to go get it for her. She gulped that beer down like nothing and she HATES beer. Nothing happened to the baby and my nephew is now 7. IMO it wouldn't be bad.

I had an occasional glass of wine here and there and it didnt' do anything to kayla except maybe make her a physco child, LMAO

I am not a doctor to say it is or isn't okay but personally I don't think one glass is bad!!!

Re: drinking wine while pregnant... UPDATE ON MY NIGHT

I drank a few glasses of wine while pregnant (not at once but 1 glass a day on a few occassions). Every doctor I asked (and there were several!) said it was absolutely fine and that the reason they say none is really for those people that don't understand "moderation!" Joseph turned out to be a very healthy boy and about 2 months advanced for his age! I would stay away from any hard liquors though... If you are still concerned, ask your doctor.
