Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
My company outsources their development to India. They recently let go of staff here to outsource to India. The reason is obviously $$ they get 2 for the price of 1. Sad but true.

Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
THE ARTICLE SAYS: "Challenger identifies five sectors with an especially low risk of exportation:
Health care. “You can’t go overseas to see a doctor or nurse or get physical therapy,” Challenger points out. The aging of America’s population makes health care a good long-term career bet, he adds, singling out medical transcription and nursing as two particularly hot areas."
I have to completely disagree! I'm a medical transcriptionist, and we are already feeling the effects of outsourcing to India. As a matter of fact, Medical Transcription is one of the jobs that is being outsourced the MOST, and it's growing rapidly! Why would a hospital pay an American transcriptionist or company 4.00 a page for medical reports, when they can outsource to India for half as much or even lower??
It's an outrage, if you ask me.
Being a generous country and having a humanitarian approach are wonderful qualities, but to take jobs away from your OWN people to help the economy of another country is completely ridiculous. And for the companies who outsource, because it's cheaper than paying an American what they deserve....shame on you! What ever happened to loyalty and patriotism?

Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
FI works for a technology company and I can't even begin to tell you about the massive layoffs they go through for this reason. His company has also been known to fly to India when there are open positions and offer to relocate the people. Still cheaper than hiring Americans. It's a real shame.

Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
OUr companie is outsourcing to singapore.
The concept that outsourcing is a humanitarian thing is complete BS. Its pure economics! Its costs about a 1/3 to hire someone there than here. And since corporations are out to make profits, not their employees happy - that is the route they take.
Dont worry - it will bite them in teh ass soon enough b/c all outsourcing efforts eventually go sour and it costs the company 2x as much as they saved to repair it.

Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
I agree- this is NOT a humanitarian effort at all. This has been going on in the IT world for some time now. It is MUCH cheaper to hire people in India then to hire them here. It is also cheaper in terms of overhead. Corporations do not do very much to "help" others, they do things to make more and more money. Of course, the donate funds to charity to get the tax breaks, and get the public to like them but stuff like this is always about the bottom line only.

Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
hubby said he read another article that says the companies that are outsourcing says they know it will cost them to make it run smoothly but in the long run it will be worth it to them. He said the article says they are willing to take a little pain now for the bigger pay off later

Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
This is why I'm so glad that I don't work for a company that sells any products or creates any consumable goods. Luckily, my profession is service-based and what I do cannot be done anywhere else but where I do it. I really feel for anyone who has to worry about losing their jobs to cheaper labor overseas.

Re: IS YOUR JOB MOVING TO INDIA: INTERESTING ARTICLE
funny you should post this because my company just announced we are hiring in india and china. of course, they say they aren't outsourcing because they are hiring, but it's the same thing. they said a few hundred in india and about a hundred in china. however, i know some info that tells me it will be up to 5000 in india!! that means they will completely move development offshore. hubby is so concerned about his job. i'm not so concerned for me because i plan to leave to go into teaching anyway. he's now scrambling to get a back up career.
