Please recommend a fun, engaging, "can't put it down" book for the plane and laying on the beach in Dominican Republic!
I like misteries, also funny, sarcastic "Sex and the City" type stories". THank you!

Anya have you read The DaVinci Code? I think you would really like that...
Good in Bed is very "a la Sex and the CIty" - I didnt' like it, but I am not into those types of books really. But the main character is engaging!
Another great book is The Weight of Water.

did you try the beach house by James Patterson? it's all about a murder in the Hamptons. Great book for a plane/vacation/sitting by the pool

by Laurie Notaro is a funny book of short essays-she has another one too but I don't know how it is.

Yes, General's Daughter (with John Travolta) was based on DeMille's book. IMO, the book was WAY better than the movie. The whole re-enactment of the scene with the daughter played really gratuitous (to me) in the movie. I should add that I don't usually like movies based on books that I've read - the movie never plays the way it did in my head while I read it. Well, rarely.

I'm anxious to read "The Wedding" and "The Guardian".
"A Bend in the Road" was the only one I found disappointing. I can't remember the story that much so I may read it again to give it another chance.

I always enjoy Janet Evanovich (hilarious and great characters), Olivia Goldsmith (humerous, diverse characters/leading ladies) and Mary Higgins Clark (heroine/mystery) books.

Have you read anything by Julia Alvarez?
She's an American writer who spent most of her childhood in the DR. Many of her books are based in the DR, or are centered on Dominican American characters. When I travel, I often read books about where I am visiting or by an author from that area.
"How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent" and "In the Time of the Butterflies" are good reads. A little heavier and more involved than a quick beach book, though.
