Man of Honor?
Hi everyone! I would love your opinions, please!
FH and I want to have a small bridal party with maybe 1-2 bridesmaids, and 1-2 groomsmen. He has asked his brother (his only sibling) to be Best Man (FH was Best Man at his brother's wedding). I have one sibling too, a brother, and wanted him to have a position of honor at the wedding. So, instead of making him simply a Groomsman or having 2 best men, I asked him to be my "Man of Honor." He was really touched.
I was really happy with my decision, but a recent conversation with a relative shook me a little. She was telling me about a horrible wedding that she went to, and was putting down how the bride had 2 men of honor, and how tacky it was. Now I'm worried that people are going to react negatively to my Man of Honor!
What do you ladies think?
Thank you!

Re: Man of Honor?
First, it's your decision - yours and your FHs. Second, I think the person in the "Honor" position should be the most important person to you - outside of your FH - and if that person is male, then I see no reason in having a Man of Honor. I think it's thoughtful, touching and meaningful and shame on anyone who would say otherwise to you.

Re: Man of Honor?
I think you should do it - who cares what other people think.
The only thing to consider is the "girly" things. He probably wouldn't be much help planning a shower, bachelorette party, or helping you with the wedding details. Would your Mom or FMIL help with that?

Do what makes you happy. I don't think I would think twice if I saw this at a wedding.

Re: Man of Honor?
I am doing the same thing! I am having my only sibling, my brother (my best friend), as my 'Best Man' too and my cousin (she's like my sister) as my 'Maid of Honor' and FI is having his brother as his 'Best Man' and his sister as his 'Maid of Honor'!! I think it's very nice and more meaningful! You watch - everyone will be doing it soon!!

I love the idea!! Do what is best for you!! Remember it is YOUR wedding!! BTW, having a "man of honor" is becoming a quite popular thing to do, I have been hearing about it more and more, I think it is wonderful!

Re: Man of Honor?
First - it's your wedding and it's your brother and he should be an important part of the day if he's an important part of your life!
second - who cares what people think? i hate to say this, but no matter what you do or dont' do - there WILL be people who come to your wedding who will think negative thoughts...that's human nature.
third - if i went to a wedding and i saw a man of honor - i would be so touched that the bride's brother was such an important influencce in her life to recieve such a place of honor....i would LOVE it!!!
Go with your heart!

Tacky? That's ridiculous!!! There's nothing tacky about asking your brother to be the Man of Honor-I really like the idea!

Re: Man of Honor?
how can asking the (2nd?) most important man in your life to hold such a position be tacky?
i think it's wonderful.
i wish i had thought to do that for my brother. he was a BM.
what i did do though was after all the BP went down the aisle, they rolled out the aisle runner.
then my brother (a GM) and my sister (MOH) walked, then my dad, me, and my mom walked, so my WHOLE FAMILY escored my down the aisle really.
i wish i could have made them the FAMILY OF HONOR. they certainly deserve it.

Re: Man of Honor?
I'm having a man of honor too! I'm glad to hear that you all think its a nice idea. Its all about having someone important and special to you stand up for you and witness something very important and special. I too only have one sibling, a brother, and if it was not for him FH and I would never have gotten together. Growing up we were very close and he is very good friends with my FH so who better to have on the alter with us. At first he made all kinds of jokes about slow dancing with the best men and what color dress he was going to wear but now that the wedding is a month a way he has become more serious about it and i can tell how honored he was to be asked. He even sent a gift to my shower! My mom, aunt, and 7 bridesmaids have taken care of all the girly things. But believe me I have also received comments and been the butt of a few jokes for having a Man of Honor but it was the right decision for me.

Re: Man of Honor?
Personally....I think it's a great idea. I have a really good friend who is gay...and he really wants to be a BM...but refuses to wear pink! We will find him something to wear and he will be part of our special day. I say....GO FOR IT!

Re: Man of Honor?
Thank you SO much for your support, ladies! I feel so much better about my decision now! My brother will be a great Man of Honor! (He was so happy for me when I got my dress, and has promised to be there for me when I need opinions, suggestions, etc.) You are all completely right - it is our wedding, and we have to focus on making ourselves happy.
For the girly stuff I have my Mom, BMs, Grandma, Aunts, and my Uncle/Godfather (or, as I have lovingly named him since he became a co-wedding planner, my "Fairy Godfather" ).
kkfeb04 - my brother joked about the dress too! He teasingly said that he'll wear one as long as it "shows off his muscles."
Thank you all again!
