Have you heard of 2checkout.com? Is this a SCAM?** UPdated
I was reviewing my credit card statement and there is a charge that I did not authorize from them. I went to their web site and they actually have a link for "Don't recognize a charge?"
I'm freaking out that someone out there has my credit card. I called them and of course they are closed at this hour.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: Have you heard of 2checkout.com? Is this a scam?
I issued an investigation with my credit card company and will call in the AM.
It looks like their web site acts as a transactional medium for people who sell goods on the web. I always shop from name brand people though (like fortunoff or amazon) so this doesn't make sense.
Just to be safe, I am ordering a credit report to make sure there isn't any other funny business going on.
I feel so vulnerable.

Re: Have you heard of 2checkout.com?
Does your credit card have 24 hour customer service? Call them and see if there is other unusual activity on your card. I'm guessing that if that's the only unusual charge and you've already gotten the statement then it's probably OK.
It may just be something you or DH charged that uses a different name - I get those sometimes when I buy from websites or catlogs - even had one site that specifically told me the credit card statement would have a different name.

Re: Have you heard of 2checkout.com?
There are no other unusual charges....but I only shop at name brand web sites so this is somewhat odd. DH's card charges are listed separately from mine on the bill so it is definately my account # at issue.
I will call the co in the AM and see what is going on.
Thanks for your replies. I'll let you know what happens!

There IS a problem going on.....
I called the merchant at 2checkout.com They report that I ordered webhosting services through a site called hostonfly.com.
I've never heard of them and do not host my own web site. They said they'd contact hostonfly and would be in touch in 48 hours. I went to hostonfly's web site and there are no phone numbers for me to call....and part of me wonders if the 2 companies are related
I feel so naked and vulnerable. I love shopping online and always use 'name' brand vendors. I am now concerned.
I've cancelled my card and see no other unusual activity. I checked my credit reports and see no other odd stuff so I hope I caught it all in time.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Re: There IS a problem going on.....
Back in December I orderd a collar for my cat that had his name and our address embroidered on it (we had just moved into a new house) and they used 2checkout.com.
I never received the collar. I complained to the company and they told me it was on the way. I said I don't care, I don't want it any longer.
I was never charged though.

Re: There IS a problem going on.....
Hmmmm...that's really interesting. You're the first person I've come across that has heard of them. I"m glad you weren't charged.
I'm of the impression that they are like Pay Pal - they are a financial clearinghouse of sorts for smaller merchants. I called back and asked more questions about this alleged vendor of their's - they didn't have their phone # and then they put me on perpetual hold.
I'm letting it go and letting AMEX research it. It is maddening and I feel vulnerable but there isn't much more I can do.

Re: There IS a problem going on.....
karen...I've never heard of the compnay...but I did have an issue with the company I bought my cell phone from...it was in my contract that if I didn't pay within the first 6 months that they would charge me $300 and in the second 6 months $150...
I never let my plan lapse but they charged me $150!!! I called AMEX and disputed it...the company disputed it...I did it again...then the third time AMEX asked if I could send proof that I had paid every bill - I ended up forgetting and was never charged again
so AMEX can help you...

Re: There IS a problem going on.....
Gee, thanks for the info on AMEX. I'm glad to know you had a positive experience.
I"ve never had a problem like this before and so far I have been pleased with their response. They IMMEDIATELY credited my account the 150 even though they estimate their investigation would take 6-8 weeks. That's GREAT customer service!
They are also overnighting me a new card with a different account # - free of charge. V. nice.
