Gifts received before the wedding

If a gift comes in before the wedding, do you open it then? Do you send a thank you then? Or do you wait until the wedding?

FH's aunt and uncle sent us a check (they aren't coming) and I haven't done anything with it because I'm not sure what is proper. And then today one of my friends from work just dropped off a gift. He isn't coming either because of a prior obligation. Should I open it and send a thank you immediately?

Doofus that I am, when I had our thank you cards printed, I said something to the effect of "thank you for sharing in our special day" so I'd have to find other cards for these gifts.

perhaps you could pick a set of cards up from a stationary store... and after the wedding send them the thank you picture(if your doing that for your other guests)

I would open it.. unless it's only a couple of days before the wedding, then maybe I'd wait and open those all together (then again... maybe I wouldn't ) Send your thank-yous now, that also lets the person know you received and acknowledged that you appreciate their gift.

IMO - Keep the ones that say "thank you for sharing in our special day" and use them for everyone. They ARE sharing your day - just not in person.

To the gifts that we have received that are for the wedding I bought these really cute cards at Hallmark and sent those out immediately. Then, for the ones that are like my 83 year old great-uncle I will send him one of the Thank you pictures after the wedding but I sent the card out now to acknowledge that we got the gift!

i just know i wouldn't be able to wait and between mike and i we'd have to open it!! (we're so bad!)

BTW, I think it is completely OK to open early. Hey, they sent it early, right?

heh, I was just thinking, me & FH are so bad, we actually open 1 gift on Christmas eve b/c the two of us are like little kids.... we can never wait!

FH won't let me open it!!!

He said we should send a thank you now but acknowledge that we are waiting to open it until the wedding.

I guess that's what we'll do... Rats! I want to know NOW!!

im NEVER able to wait... when he gets his birthday cards with money i them even though i know what it is , im still too ansy and make him open them up...
I get most of my gifts on christmas eve(FI's families gifts)... otherwise id be going crazy waiting til christmas day for gifts...

if that was me, i'd have opened it and re-wrapped it already! lol....luckily mike and i have the same level of patience to wait on gifts - none!!!

Actually - you are supposed to open wedding gifts as they arrive and promptly send out a thank you to those people - then you can always send them a thank with a pic after the wedding if you want - but you are actually supposed to open them...now you can tell you FH - that you need to open them

I would send the Thank you now, even if you don't have the right thank you's yet that you were going to use. Then send another thank you if you have thank you pictures done so they have a picture. You can thank them again and mention how you wanted to send the picture to them. Nothing wrong with it. But defintely send a thank you now, before you cash the check.
