For Plus size gals ---I am so dissapointed--LONG

Girls,

I need to vent. I went and tried on wedding gowns today for the first time and I have to say I am got so sad. First off I went to places that had plus sizes dresses and get this they didn't fit. Now I am a big girl but I know there are girls out there bigger. And I am sure alot of them are married and wore a bridal gown for it.

Anyway, I tried on maybe 8 dresses and then got discouraged b/c of the sizes. The second dress I tried on did look amazing and I thought oh my gosh this is could be the one. The gals (my entire bridal party and mom) thought the same thing BUT it didn't close and so I am don't know if you can really tell with that.

So needless to say. I feel pretty terrible about myself. I looked forward to finding my wedding dress since i was a girl. And I made sure to pump up my self esteem before going in but it just didn't seem to stay with me. The only time I felt really great was when I had that dress on.

So now I need to REALLY focus on losing weight but I don't know if I can lose all that and then try and find a wedding dress closer to the date.

Sorry so long but I just had to vent. I am sure I will feel better tomorrow and dust myself off.

I just thought it would be so great instead I felt dissapointed.

Thanks for listening.

Robyn

Please do not let the MEAN manufacturers get to you. The bridal dress companies are bizarre. If I told you what size they made me order just because of my boobs you would be shocked!! I have seen plenty of girls trying on dresses of all sizes that the dress didn't zipper up. I had that problem with 2 dresses!! Please don't let it get to you. The sizing charts that these manufactorers use is ludicrious. Please don't be sad of frustrated. I think MANY of us have been there plus size or not!!!

I had the same problem when I went to get my dress.. I am not in the plus sizes but it is just as bad for all of us and I felt pretty horrible afterwards as well...

First the girl said, "Bridal gowns run 2 sizes larger than your normal size" Ok, FINE, even though that ****s. Then she proceeds to show me dresses 4 times my size and insists they'll fit "just fine" I was SWIMMING in them. I actually did need 2 sizes larger than my normal, which is very depressing.. just don't let them get to you, remember that it's NOT your normal size, it's just ONE DRESS that you only wear once!

Re: For Plus size gals ---I am so dissapointed--LONG

Listen, when I got married last year I was a fabulous size 20 and proud of it. I found my dress by the second place I went too. I looked at alot of dresses online before going to any stores. I understand the dissapointment you are feeling. Many places only have dresses in size 12? Which is rediculous if your my size. We went to David Bridal and the dress I was interested in I tried on size 14. It of course did not close either, but I knew that was the one. The arms were too tight and the back was wide open, but it looked beautiful on me and that is all that mattered. When the dress came in it was almost perfectly fitting me. The sleeves needed to be taken in a little, the hem taken up, and the bussel. SO DO NOT GIVE UP. I have been over weight for a long time and you will know your dress when you try it on, whether or not the dress fits at the store.

Good Luck in your hunting!

Oh, 1 more thing...the dresses usually run on the small side so don't think you are really that size.

I am sorry to did not have the best of experiences. Lose weight because you want to feel better, be healthier, not because of the wedding. You ave time until you "HAVE TO" order a dress.

I think the problem of the non-fitting sample is one we all face. I'm a size 12 in street clothes, and the sample I had to put on was a size 10 -- which meant it was really an 8 or a 6. Almost everyone has to try on a dress that doesn't close in the back. If you love the way it looks, just order it in your size. That's what I did, and I love it even more now that it fits me correctly.

Hi

I looked at your profile and you have an entire year to lose weight if you want to!! Join us on the slim down boards, the girls on there are great for motivation and tips.

I bought my dress this past January and wedding is in September. When I bought it, it was so tight I could barely breathe!!! But I bought it anyway for motivation! When I went back in May to pick it up, it fit much better (still a little tight but I'm working on that). I joined Curves and now I am in the process of big time dieting. I keep swinging back and forth between WW and low carb. But, the point is, don't get dicouraged, because you can DEFINITELY do it if you really want to, and either way you will look beautiful!!!

Do not give up hope. I just lost 65 pounds on Weight watchers, it has taken me 16 months so far, and I have 20 to go. I am never going to be teeny tiny. You will find a dress. MonCheri makes dresses as well as Emme makes plus size Bm dresses and wedding gowns. I got my dress at Estelles, amd they had all sizes there, my weight loss is costing me 675.00 to have my gown altered from a size 24 to a size 16. You can do it, and you will find a dress. Feel free to Fm mail me if you need to talk. You will make a beautiful no matter if u are a size 2 or a size 50.

Re: For Plus size gals ---I am so dissapointed--LONG

Listen . . .you are going to be fine. PLEASE take it from me. I am a living testimony as to WHY you're gonna be ok.

I'm a size 14 in "real" life . . .but when I went to try on dresses . . . they told me that I was a size 18. At first I was crushed . . . but then after frequenting these boards, I quickly learned that wedding dress manufacturers are cruel. The lady at the bridal shop suggested that I purchase a size 16. . .and after waiting 4 months for the dress to arrive, when I tried it on, it didn't fit. I was CRUSHED.

I've been doing weight watchers and I am pleased to tell you that I have lost a total of 15 pounds in about 2 months. I eat regular foods and I am definately not "dieting". I just weighed myself last night after refusing to weigh in for a about a month.

You have PLENTY of time. Keep looking, don't give up . . and do what makes YOU happy! And most importantly, my shoulder is here for you to lean on!

Re: For Plus size gals ---I am so dissapointed--LONG

PLEASE don't try to lose weight "for the wedding". You will find yourself feeling deprived, unhappy and depressed about your wedding! That's NO fun for you or those around you! If you do it in an unhealthy way (fad diets, undereating etc.) You may be a little thinner but you will look pale, drawn out, and unhealthy on your big day.

Order the dress you love in your size, if it looked beautiful when it didn't fit, imagine how it will look when it does! My FSIL was a BEAUTIFUL size 20 (she is a 16 in street clothes) on her wedding day, and she looked radiant.

If you'd like to lose weight, change your lifestyle, visit your doctor to make sure their is nothing else going on (I found out a few years ago that I had a glandular problem which has since been fixed), and visit a nutritionist, then start walking.

BUT, don't expect to lose a ton before you go dress shopping, that's unhealthy, and with all the prewedding plans you may gain a few pounds right before the wedding. If you're so focused on your weight you won't have fun.

Re: For Plus size gals ---I am so dissapointed--LONG

The Paloma Blanca Diva Collection is very true to size, where did you try going?

Adriennes in East Islip had a bunch of dresses, and they had a range of sizes, becasuse some were tight, some fit and others were swimming on me.

Even though the dress doesn't fit, or won't clise in the back, you can still get the right idea, if you have someone behind you pulling the top a bit and have hte bridal store clip it, You will be amazed at how different it makes the dress look.

Alos I went to DAvids Bridal and they have dresses in all sizes, so that was great to go to, I really got to see whta type of dress I liked and didn't like.

Good Luck, and remember this is supposed to be a happy time, don't let some stupid bridal gown manufacturer make you fell bad about yourself.

I am a size 10 in regular clothes now. The dress sample of my dress that I tried on was a size 8 which meant it fit people that wore a size 4!!!!! When I tried the dress on I was a 14 because I had a baby 5 months earlier. I sqoze myself into the dress. It didn't close but the girls at the bridal suite clipped me in and I got a good idea of what the dress would look like in my size. It was the one. Even if it doesnt fit they have clips to help it look like it would in a human size. If its the one then its the one. Go with your feeling.

I totally agree with kptoys. The sample of the gown that I ordered was a size 14 (those that know me, know that I am not a size 14 ) so the dress didn't close but my salesgirl clipped the back of the dress to my bra so that I could get an idea and once that was done I knew that it was the dress. Here is a picture of my trying on the sample.

Don't be stressed...I am a full figured bride as well...I was able to find a beautiful dress at the Wedding Center. Don't get discouraged! The dress is out there. I used the whole depressing shopping experience to eat better and excercise.

Thank you everyone. You are all so sweet to try and help me feel better. It (meaning weight) has been a struggle my entire life but i absoulutely see the point everyone is making. The people who do these dresses are cruel...LOL

I feel better today. I did love that one dress. And that might be the one. I feel though I do need to check out other places.

When do you think the last possible date to get the dress would be?

You girls rock by the way...LOL

Yeah really do NOT be stressed at all- I wear a size 12 in the store... and I have a SUPER broad back and had to buy a size 18 dress and PAY for extra sizing (an extra $150 on the dress)... They had to clip the sample on me too... unless you are a size 8 or under that will be the deal.... I ordered my dress 1st week of June for a January wedding & there were no problems getting it in on time.

Re: For Plus size gals ---I am so dissapointed--LONG

If you have found a dress that you love, close or not it doesn't matter. There are also girls who much smaller than sample sizes and they cannot tell what looks good because the dress it too big on them. So both ways- sample sizes stinks.
You have to understand that you are loved for who you are, not the size of the bridal gown that you will wear.
I do feel that more stores need to carry larger sample sizes because it is unfair to many girls out there! I am not sure but David's Bridal may carry many more plus size gowns for you to try on- because they carry a lot of cash& carry gowns. You wouldn't have to purchase the gown there, but you could get a better idea of the style of gown that you like.
Again, you are loved- sample size or not!!!

Re: For Plus size gals ---I am so dissapointed--LONG

I was soooo scared to start trying on dresses because of my size in January (I was about a size 18 to 20). I went with my sister for her to try on her bridesmaid dress at Macy's Bridal in Manhasset(they are the best) when the salesperson convinced me to try on some. The second dress she suggested for me was the one. They had to clip the sample on me also because it did not fit and it was a size 22. But I knew it was the one so we ordered it.

The dress came in early (about two weeks ago) and I wanted to just see it to make sure it was the right dress. The salesgirl asked if I wanted to try it on and I was terrified to but I did. And guess what - it actually has to be taken in. I almost cried.

Now I haven't done anything drastic (now a size 14 to 16). What I've done is I only drink water and occasional diet soda, cut down on carbs, eat tons of salad, and go walking at least three times a week.

You won't lose a ton of weight but you will lose - it is a lifestyle change and you'll feel good (unlike you do on those crash diets). And definitely try Macy's if you like Demetrios gowns - they are great and know what works with your figure.... Good luck and FM me for anything...

Dont get upset-I would go shopping if I were you, and call different bridal stores and ask them if they carry Plus sizes, but let them know the type of gown you are looking for-
1-do you want any type of sleeve
or are you ok with strapless--that makes a difference ---reason being: its tough to put a sleeve on a straples dress and many stores carry alot of strapless.
If its a tank style a sleeve can be added.
This is my 1st day on LI weddings, I work in a bridal store for 5yrs now --and I AM GETTING Married at the Watermill August 2004---2nd wedding
So if you are interested If you want to chat with me in a email, I will be happy to --I AM A PLUS SIZE
:)
