Those who have moved, packing question
I never really moved so I am new to this. (When I moved into FI's apartment I didnt take a lot with me)
Is there a specific way things should be packed when moving?

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
I don't think there's a specific way, other than carefully!
I used a lot of my clothes (T's, socks, etc.) as packing material to protect breakables. You save money and space that way. And nothing broke! I was amazed.

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
Pack things that you're less likely to use soon first. Pack books first b/c they're easy to pack

Save your old newpapers you can use them to wrap your things. The more you have the better

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
thanks.
We're actually selling or giving away books we've read and dont want. So hopefully that will ease the burden of things to pack.
I have my grandmothers china is still in its original packing when my dad shipped it up from Florida and none of it broke so I dont think I am going to touch any of that and just ship it as is.
So far today was packing winter clothes (which made a lot of room in the closets) and photo albums.

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
yes we lots of newspapers and we've been wrapping glass stuff in them. Family has been giving us nice stemware and we never took them out of the box so that stuff went in with the sweaters.
thank you everyone...
I dread seeing how much junk we have....

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
unpacking I dont think I'll mind because we'll have a lot more space to put things and we dont have a lot now so there will be a place for everything

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
if you have anything that is really fragile...go to one of those storage places and buy the appropriate boxes. I also found that bankers boxes are great!!

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
make sure you write on the boxes what is inside. you will go nuts otherwise when its time to unpack.

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
Don't overpack the boxes so that they're too heavy! (Even if you have movers.)
Label all the sides to the box. (Gotta' love Sharpies.)
If you're not moving too far and can bring fragile or sentimental items to the new location, I would suggest doing that. Movers just don't care.

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
I've moved so many times...I even did a speech this semester on moving. Very important tip about your clothes hanging in the closet - don't take them out and pack them in suitcases or anything like that. Use garbage bags. Take the bag and put a small hole in the bottom, stick the hanger through the hole and pull down over your clothes, tying a knot at the bottom of the bag. this way, when you go to move them, you can just take them out of the closet and bring them to the new place, and put them back in the closet in the new place and you don't have to worry about looking for anything.
I also prefer bubble wrap to newspaper b/c newspaper makes everything dirty so it takes longer to clean up.

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
Label the boxes but you can also have a list of whats in the boxes too, esp if you end with some boxes of mish mosh. usually the packing begins very organized because you are trying to group things but then you end up with all sorts of stuff and since those are the boxes you pack last, you will probably be looking for those things first. Good luck. Also label all sides so you know which box it is from any angle.

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
LABEL LABEL LABEL!!
and if you can, pack drawers of stuff togther - well not actually drawers but exactly how you want it - pack it so when you unpack its all right there and its faster to undo!! (otherwise you will always have a few boxes around that have stuff you never found a place for!!)

Re: Those who have moved, packing question
Thanks
FI's friend come over today and FI gave him some books so that cleared some room.
My hallways is filled with Rubbermaid bins. They are labeled
I told FI Wedding Bin goes on top.
