Jewish Brides- Are you keeping the Glass?

After your FI breaks the glass, are you going to keep the remnants? MY FBIL mentioned yesterday that the place we have our registry puts the glass remnants into a little plastic cube or see through mezzuzah. It would have our names and wedding date on it. Thought that would be a cute idea!

Re: Jewish Brides- Are you keeping the Glass?

I did. They gave the glass to us in a little white satin pouch that he stepped on at the ceremony. Then, you bring the pieces back to them and they "suspend" the glass in a clear glass cube with our names and the date of the wedding on it. It is really beautiful!!! The glass that he broke was blue, so it really shows up inside the clear cube! I think I got it at Yussels, in Merrick.

Oh that would be perfect. That is exactly what we want. Does Yussels also have ketubahs and yarmulkes?

I thought most people used a light bulb for a better "smash" sound...would you save the monofilament too?

Marisa,

We are saving the glass. WE already got a mezuzzah that you can keep the shrds of glass after you break it.

We got a blue irredescent one. They are inexpensive at Zion Lion on Long Island. We also got our beautiful kettubah there.

Tardlet -

I called west side judaica and they said that they have ketubahs and mezuzzas for weddings. I'll be in the west 80s on Thursday and will check them out for you.

Re: Jewish Brides- Are you keeping the Glass?

I think I am going to do this but am having trouble finding a glass with a stem that will fit (its 6" high so the glass should be about 4 1/2") edited to say I called the guy at the place that does these and he said they remove part of the stem to make it fit. Why didn't I think of that?

It really is a great idea though. There is nothing these people won't invent to get you to spend money on wedding related stuff, but then, who am I to talk, I am buy every wedding related thing I come across.

My best friends in the whole world bought me a mezzuzah and breaking glass set. The mezzuzah has a space for a tube of the shards to hang...it's so beautiful!

Meghan,
I went to Westside Judaica for my Ketubah and yalmulkes. They had a great selection of Ketubahs and did the calligraphy so quickly too. They matched the internet pricing on the yalmulkes too.

They also sell glasses in pouches for breaking at the ceremony.

Alina-
I don't exactly know what you meant about not keeping the glass b/c of "cost reasons". If it's a matter of $ at this time you may just want to hold onto the glass with the hopes of doing something with it in the future. My MIL had ours suspended in the cube and my DH almost teared up when he saw it. It is very special to him and it might be something you could do in the future.

Re: Jewish Brides- Are you keeping the Glass?

Jenny, I believe having the glass imbedded into a sculpture is about $200 and up. To me the cost is too much, and I am not that religious. Breaking a light buld seems like a much easier solution.

Re: Jewish Brides- Are you keeping the Glass?

We're looking into having it put into a kaleidoscope. It's only about $65, versus the $150+ we saw for the frame/mezuzzah/kiddush cup things.

Re: Jewish Brides- Are you keeping the Glass?

This place is getting back to me with specifics, but said it's possible. Hand of the Craftsman - Nyack

Custom Kaleidoscopes This place sent me the following via e-mail: If you are going to do the custom scope with your wedding invitation the price would be $65. If you want to use our Judaica Wedding design from our stock the price will be $$51

I'm just waiting to hear from the first place before I make a decision.
