Hey girls - i have a question about baptisms -

FH told me this and i was wondering if the Greek Churches around here follow this. He said that a godparent can only baptize a child of the same sex - so because I baptized a boy i now can only baptize boys in the feature and no girls. I read in a book that it is true in greece but the practice i s relaxed in America - has anyone dealt with this??

It is suggested that you baptize the same sex because let's say one day your godson meets your goddaughter and they hit it off. A church will not marry them because they share the same godparent. In the eyes of god, they are considered to be brother/sister.

This happened to a couple I know (believe it or not) but they eventually found a greek church that would overlook this and they were married. However, they went trough alot to make it happen.

My husband has baptized both but one lives in NY and one in PA. I have baptized a girl but if I'm asked to baptize again in the future, I may have my husband do the oil and I'll do the other stuff.

Re: Greek Brides??

Georgia-I've heard the same thing also-that you should only baptise one sex, because you don't want your Godchildren marrying each other. I don't really think anyone really goes by this though, maybe they did back in the day, but not anymore.

Re: Greek Brides??

My closest friend is going to be our Koumbara, she's single, therefore we are not having a Koumbaro, but FH's brother is going to be his best man.
Now my question is-should I have a maid of honor being that my best friend is our Koumbara?
My sister is going to be in the bridal party, but I'm not sure if it necessary to ask her to be the maid of honor. Do most Greek wedding have a Koumbara & maid of honor, or just a Koumbara?

I was my cousin's koumbara a few years ago (before I met FH) and my cousin wrote in her program that I was the koumbara/maid of honor. Her husband had a best man.

We are only having a koumbaro and he will be FH's koumbaro/bestman. My best friend will be my maid of honor.

Hi. We had a Koumbaro, Koumbara & a Maid of Honor.

Our Koumbara did the rings in the service of the betrothal, Koumbaro did the stefana. My MOH was there beside me and helped hold the candles and stuff. BTW.. My Koumbaroi are married to each other.

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi girls, I have one more question.
Did anyone use or is using a Greek quote or short poem in their programs?

I want the very first page of the program (after the cover) to just have 2 quotes, one in English & the other in Greek. I don't even know where to begin to search for a Greek one though.

Also, any suggestions for the English one??

Thanks!!

When my sister got married, they chose her husband's cousin to be the koumbara and I was her moh....so she had both.

Re: Greek Brides??

Thanks! How did you like them?? We actually contacted them. I guess they usually charge about $3,500 for a wedding, but since we are getting married on New Years Eve, they are quoting us about 7k! A little too pricey... Hopefully they will come down in price!

I have heard about another band called "Something Special" does anyone have number/contact for them?? Or do you know if they are any good?

I need to find it. I did have contact info for Something Special. They did a family friends wedding a few years ago and some christmas parties I have attended. I remember them being pretty good. I thought their rates were high. But, we didn't persue b/c DH wanted a strictly greek and authentic Band. More specifically he wanted a Xiotiko band. I let him have that hehe.

My sister used "Something Special." They were very good but very .

Too much for my budget so I booked Accoustics. They were great with greek music but a bit weak on the american. We wanted mostly greek anyway, so I didn't mind that much.

Re: Greek Brides??

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. Do you know anything about the VIPS? I have been trying to get a hold of the guy from that band as well....still no luck!

It sounds like there a few very good Greek bands, but since a lot of the people coming to the wedding are not Greek...I want to keep everyone happy.

VIPS are very good. You should also look into Alpha & Delta. They are all good.

Georgia, I am pretty sure our Church still follows the baptismal rule, but only if the children are close in age. If you have a Goddaughter, you really should not baptise a boy in the next few years... and talk to the Priest about it if you do ever decide to.

Alpha is good, I saw them at a wedding a couple years ago.

Something Special .... Something Expensive!!! I think they were over $6000 for just the plain band. Gove them a call anyway, you have nothing to lose.

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi Girls! I can't believe that my day is almost here! I am so excited I can't wait!!!! I'm not on the boards as much anymore for the past couple of days b/c I'm really trying to get everything done this week. My furniture is here from Greece and is being delivered on Thursday morning so I'm going to spend the entire day cleaning tomorrow!!!

Everything is pretty much ready or almost ready. My programs will be done on Saturday and I'm going for my third fitting on Friday. I'm just trying to get in contact with the priest so that Mike and I can meet with him to discuss some stuff before the big day!

Wish me luck for the next few days girls and pray that I get everything done on time!!!

Re: Greek Brides??

I just picked up my picture CD from the Christening FH & I had on Saturday, where we were the Godparents, should I post them here for all to see, even though it's not wedding related?

That's ZP (Zodohou Pigi ?SP?) in the Bronx, it is very pretty, were're going back there on Sunday to take the baby for her second communion, I think they're also having their annual festival this weekend, but I'm not 100% sure.
