stupid question #4: how do i word the invites if my mom is paying nothing, his mom's handling 2 small vendors, and we're paying the lion's share? do i put both our mom's names, or just his, or just ours? whose do i put first?

this is the stuff i can't stand about wedding planning.

I wrote: Together with our families.....

(just to keep the peace).....
both our parents contributed nominal amounts...

Okay, here's my stupid question. I am trying to save money by doing my own centerpieces. I'm thinking of those cylinder vases with the one orchid submerged in water and then putting a few tea light candles around it. If I'm not paying a florist to create them, who sets them up?

I have the same question LOL! I am doing my own cp's as well. I'm thinking the RH does them when setting up the tables. I was thinking of having family friends set them up.

I was hoping the RH would do them too. I actually joked with my sister's friend about her doing it as part of my gift.

The RH will do it but if it is something a little complicated then you may want to have a close friend there to help set up and make sure they're done right. I am doing something similar with the cylinder vases and submerged flowers and i am going to prep them the night before so all the RH has to do is fill with water and light the floating candle but my close will be there to oversee them.

I have a lot of stupid questions that I never feel justify their own post, so I thought if I made one thread then people could just add their Q&A's to it! haha

Ok, Stupid Question #1: Does every ceremony use the unity candle? I wanted to started some of the DIY stuff like that but not if it's something not everyone does. (We're getting married in a church.)

Stupid Question #2:I can't seem to get a straight answer on this - are sparklers legal in NY? I would LOVE to use them at my RH but don't want to bother asking them if they're not legal.

Hmm that's all I can think of for now, I guarantee I'll have more!

#2 Sparklers are LEGAL. You just have to check with your RH to make sure its ok with them.
Fireworks are not legal without a permit. You need to hire a firework company like Grucci or Bay to help you with the process. You need permits from the town that the RH is in.
Indoor Pryo is not legal in NY. That would be sparklers coming out from the cps and little explosions.

I know this b/c I work with Grucci all the time for my events.

stupid questions #5: receiving lines: do it? don't do it? accept that you can't avoid doing it bc people corner you anyway? how long do you allow yourself to kiss & hug everyone you know?

stupid question #6: i hear all this talk about after parties. i gotta say, i've never been to a formal after party, just the typical let's-go-to-the-bar-after-the-wedding business. my reception will likely end at 12:30 or 1. do we arrange for an "after party" or do we just informally ask our favorite people to join us at a bar?

I think the receiving line is relatively important. Most people will do a quick kiss and tell how you beautiful you look, lol and then move on. I just think it's nice to personally see each and every person that came to your ceremony.
And yeah, w/o it, most people will totally corner you at your reception.

for the invitations, i'll be printing them through inkspun.com

the seating cards will be handled by my mom who most likely will be printing labels in a fancy script and sticking them to the placecard (i have placecard frames so the labels wouldnt look tacky)

we aren't doing a formal after party....

it is going to be known that we are going........................... and who ever wants to go can go we may put it on our website closer to the wedding.

You can probably take them to a calligrapher too... I don't know how much $$ that is though. LIW has them on their vendor list: http://www.liweddings.com/vendors/calligraphy/

Most places we went to tell you that vendors eat at half the price of everyone else... and some places if you're using one of their vendors they eat for free.

They eat.. depending on your RH and which vendors you use, they can be anywhere from 30-50% off.. some places even do free vendors if you use their vendors

We arent having a formal after party ... just an after party at like a bar/lounge of the hotel we are staying in that night and blocked rooms ... people do not have to come if they do not want to ... and its cash bar, we arent paying for the drinks ... HTH!

as my FMIL would say, "no question is a stupid question"

so #1 i don't think you HAVE to do the unity candle, i don't think its a 100% must

#2 as far as i know they are legal in NY. there was another post not too long ago and i think they determined that it IS legal.

HTH!

OMG THEYRE ILLEGAL!??!!?! GRRRR
that makes me so mad esp since fh is a big fire works fan!
