wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

I don't know if there is a tactful way to ask this but...if you ladies don't mind me asking, what is the smallest (least amount) gift you received at your wedding? Sorry!!!! I'm asking because please don't get me wrong, I am very grateful for, and I love all of our friends and family who came to our wedding and for the gifts they gave us. I'm just wondering if the gift we got from a couple of friends was in line with the average wedding gift, because it seemed so...well...dare I say cheap??? Especially compared to what I gave them when they got married....thanks ladies

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

I had a couple of people give nada.

One couple gave us a crockpot. it was on our registry. We expected it as a shower gift, but no -- it was a wedding gift from a couple. It cost $40. It actually upset me more than someone giving nothing -- I'm still hoping to receive a card from the people who didn't give anything. I keep hoping that they made a mistake, and forgot to bring it. I'm hoping that's the case not out of greediness, but just because I can't believe they would come to our wedding without even a card. The crockpot couple are good friends of DH, and are not in any sort of financial stress. They are actually well-off. Its so weird!

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

same- 0$ and no card.

i don't think there's an "avg" really...totally depends on the people and their situation. so i wouldnt really compare. and also, unfort not every couple will be able to reciprocate what you were able to do for them.

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

$0 no card. I think the smallest gift from a NYer was $50? (from a friend of mine in his 20s).

Our OOTers had to spend lots of $$$ on flight/hotel but we got a LOT of gifts that aren't really on par with what NYers give ($25 registry item, $100 gift card to Macy's for a family of 5, $50 gift card to Macy's for a family of 2, $30 registry item, etc)

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

I got $0 and no card from a few people (Including the best man my DH brother-he is extremely upset at this! and his sister!-I wonder if it is a message..oh well). One of them just invited himself a few days before the wedding and I did not know on how to tell him that he was not invited so we paid for his seat $120! Then I got a $25 gift card from Macy from another couple. Then the gifts were $100, $150, $200 $250 $300 $500 and $1,000(from the other sis of my DH). We were able to make half of what we spent in the reception thanks to those who did give monetary gifts. I mean I know it's not only about money but you would think that the people who you care for and would plan on saving to help them in their new lives would do the same, but I guess some people are just ignorant or are freeloaders.

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

Actually, as of last week, everyone who attended the wedding has officially given a gift.

But the smallest was prob. $75 worth of stuff from our registry from one couple.

I just heard that "people have 1 year from the wedding to give a wedding gift" Apparently Oprah said that once. I never heard of that before -- has anyone else?

Yep that's true....we have continued to get gifts, as recently as 2 weeks ago. Our smallest was also $0 no card, smallest after that was probably stuff from the registry, or $50...

Yep, $0 and No card! That was from 3 or 4 guests!

The next was $50 I think. We got a few $20 bills as our gifts from guests that didn't come.

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

$0 and no card. But as far as actual gifts, it is hard to say. We had a lot of oot people so we got have actual rpesents and half money. The smallest money amount was probably $50 and the gift worth the least was probably $20. But I expected this because out of the LI area people just dont spend as much.

ETA: ladies I do not mean this to sound harsh at all or to start anything, but I also dont think a lot of people who are not married, havn't been to many weddings, or have been married for a longer amount of time, or are not from LI, or not brought up on LI don't think it is neccessary to give a gift worth over like $50. It doesn't mean they are being cheap. If I had never moved to LI or had married someone not from LI, I would have expected gifts that range from $30-$50. Even from families of 5. Thats just what I always saw growing up. And I think the only reason my expectations changed was because I started comming on LIweddings. LOL. Otherwise I never would have even expected to get checks or cash!! Not that I minded getting them... LOL.

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

The smallest we got was $40 from my cousin..who brought her son.

The thing that pi$$es me off is..she never RSVPd, called my dad two days before the wedding, because she heard all the other cousins were coming..and complained to my dad that she wanted to come, but had no money..so since my grandma passed away a few years ago..my dad is in charge of her estate and gave her $500 as he did to each grandchild every year since. She used the money to buy a dress for herself, an outit for her son, get her hair, nails and makeup done. To top it off..we said NO KIDS. My dad specifically told her that! She still brought him.

I haven't seen her in so long, that I swear if I wasn't wearing the big white dress and veil she wouldn't have known it was me!!

Re: wedding gift amount question...perhaps tacky...

$0 and no card. However - they traveled.

Ahhh... let it go. Best advise - honestly are you that mad?

If you are then put into perspective. Did you invite them b/c of a gift or b/ you wanted them to spend you day w/you?
Either way think about them as a couple you only know their background so just file it away , I wouldn't worry about comparing notes on here w/other brides.

just sayin these things happen..
