newlywed frustration
argh so i am trying to learn how to cook and all we ever have is CHICKEN so i am trying new things.
I make a REAL recipe - mini meatloaves from Rachel Ray. I try it and LOVE them, i give one to my mom and she loves it
So i am so excited - DH gets home at 9:30 and i serve him his dinner
he loves the potatoes, he loves the biscuits and then he starts eating hte meatloaf. he is literally gagging but he is trying to eat it
i hate that - and then i get mad at him which is dumb bc he cant help what he doesnt like but i was just so proud of myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: newlywed frustration
Have you ever looked through Everyday Food? There are some great recipes in there and they are pretty easy for the most part. I get the weekly email and you can't go wrong with the stuff in there!
Don't stress too much, just keep trying things out and you will find a good balance for your weekly menus.

Re: newlywed frustration
I know exactly how you feel.
I feel SO LOUSY lately - even spent a few hours in the ER on Monday night for a bad bad bad allergy attack. In fact, my face was so distorted, some of the other ER patrons felt the need to call me the exorcist.
I'm on a few different meds- steroids, benadryl, etc - and feel like crap.
I got up the same time that DH did today - walked 30 mins on the treadmill, showered, dressed, went to work all day, went straight to a follow up Dr's appt, then came home to start cooking so dinner would be ready when he got home.
I seasoned and grilled some chicken breasts (p.s. - i love playing with my spice rack), bought fresh stringbeans and garlic, made a nice salad, made some brown rice (not even INSTANT!) etc. He came home, surveys the stove, and says, "Uh...so what am I gonna eat?"
I'm really trying to watch my food choices...he is NOT HELPING. I ended up eating my nice meal about 20 minutes later when it was already COLD because I spent 20 minutes turning my healthy meal into "grilled chicken pepperoni supermelts" for the man. with a side of pasta.

I'm TRYING!!!!!!!
eta: oh, and he didn't even say THANK YOU! He's 2 weeks from his master's degree....I know he's stressing over his thesis, but come on. At least acknowledge that I live here too!

Re: newlywed frustration
I dont cook for that reason. I will be honest-maybe its not that he doesnt like it but more that he isnt into meatloaf? I am very Irish, grew up in an irish household and cant STAND meatloaf. Did you ask him what he didnt like about it so that maybe you can change it up next time?
Im sorry, it stinks trying to get it right

see this is where i went wrong
he doesnt like meatloaf - i KNEW that but i tried the recipe anyway bc to me it wasnt a traditional meatloaf so i thought he would like it
i cant STAND meatloaf but i actually liked this one. . .
i know it was stupid to do NOW but last night it seemed like a great idea. its just that we have chicken EVERY night and i was trying to switch it up a bit!

ugh that stinks
i can totally relate - i once made a chicken ceasar salad and after DH ate it he was like "ok whats for dinner?" he thought it was just a starter salad but i was trying to make it as the whole dinner .. . . THAT didnt work out
i didnt even get a thank you either by the way - i got "well if i DONT eat it you get mad so i TRIED to eat it" you are TWENTY FIVE years old if you REALLY wanted to pretend to like it there is no reason for you to GAG on it - either pretend you like it or dont eat it. . .
eta: while i am on a roll, why cant he put the milk away and shut off the tv in the morning? ok. i think im done, LOL.

when I cook something & DH has a negative comment, I LOSE it. It is the one thing that makes me REALLY mad. I don't know why exactly.

Re: newlywed frustration
Thankfully my DH is easy. He likes most everything that I cook, and I do admit to some mistakes. I learn from the mistakes and tweak the recipes for the next time. My oven fried chicken came out soggy - I had doubts about covering the chicken for the first half hour, but followed the directions anyway. Flavor was really good, but next time no cover.
I absolutely love my stovetop grill/griddle by LeCreuset. It lets me make a variety of things without having to fry or to use a lot of oil. I grill : skirt steaks, veal chops, lamb chops (not for me) hamburgers, chicken cutlets. We love grilled veggies - eggplant, zucchini, onions and mushrooms. I use it so often I just leave it on top of the stove unless I need all the burners.
It takes practice for cooking well and you have to try recipes to see if you like them then tweak them for your own taste.

Re: newlywed frustration
omg tilde you HAVE to get one of Giada De Laurentis' books!!!!!!! Every singly recipe I have done from her book DH loves and he is such a picky eater. He's Irish and Polish, I am italian, and there are things (i.e. spinach!) that he swears he hates, but somehow gets it down in those recipes. When I get home I'll post some of them. If I don't please feel free to FM me to remind me :)

Re: newlywed frustration
Tilde you should check out my two favorite sites: Allrecieps.com and Recipezaar.com. I like Cooking Light.com also. The first two are really great and they both get the recipes rated and along with the ratings people will post what they did to adhjust the recipes.
You don't have an oven do you? That makes it tougher but I have a few pasta recipes he might go for. Do you want me to email them to you?
