Re: HELP w/Restaurants Mexico -Rivera Maya
I had the best time staying at a little hotel in the Rivera Maya...it was probably my favorite trip. I can't remember all the places...but try some of the smaller restaurants (non tourist traps) A lot of them are on the side streets and on the beach. My husband did a lot of research and had found a file online from someone who had a destination wedding there and a list of recommendations. Try googling ex-pats and rivera maya. sorry i can't name any.

Re: HELP w/Restaurants Mexico -Rivera Maya
Just a word of advice, we wnt for our honeymoon stayed at El Dorado Soa resort all included. Be VERY CAREFUL what you eat. Stay far away from salads, fruits, vegetables, water. I came home iwth e coli and was laid up for 10 whole days, I really thought i was dying.
It was a beatiful place all around, we had a great time but an illness i wouldnt iwsh upon my worst enemy.

Re: HELP w/Restaurants Mexico -Rivera Maya
i only at the resturants in the hotels. we did go to playa del carmen but did not eat their. I didnt hit me till the last day i was there, thakfully it did not ruin my HM, just the first week being home.
Just be cautious, people always tell you watch the water and ice, but do not eat ANYTHING that is not cooked and/or washed with their water or grown in their soil. dont let it get to you while on vaca, enjoy the sun, the beach, drinks, just be cautious. Use the bottled waters they give you in the bathroom for brushing youre teeth there is a reason they are in their.

Re: HELP w/Restaurants Mexico -Rivera Maya
i went to riviera maya for my HM, but we only ate at the resort restaurants. we stayed at Excellence, and i'm happy to report that neither DH or I got sick from the food. when i went to cancun years ago, my tummy bothered me the last two days, and in punta cana the same thing, but where we stayed, we were fine. we ate everything from salad to fruit, used ice in our drinks, and we were fine.
sorry i have no outside restaurant recommendations for you.

Re: HELP w/Restaurants Mexico -Rivera Maya
Good for you, you are lucky. I know alot of people that go and they are fine when they get home. I guess just a freak thing with me. To be honest, we had an awesome time but you couldnt pay me to go back. Ecoli is a horrible sickness.
I am sure everyone will be fine when they go i just felt obligated to tell you my experience

oh i completely understand, i just wanted to share a positive experience as well.
mexico is notorious for "montezuma's revenge", and we were fortunate enough not to get sick. what happened to you is truly awful, but to get Ecoli is not the norm, an upset belly (to put it nicely) while there, is.

Re: HELP w/Restaurants Mexico -Rivera Maya
I just got back from Mexico from our honeymoon and we were fine, no gastrointestinal issues. All the hotels now use filtered water through their faucets so you can use the tap water to brush your teeth and stuff. And we didn't stay in an all-inclusive, we went out to eat for dinner every night in the town and no issues. We definitely always drank bottled water with dinner but we ate salads (amazing salads actually) and fruit with dessert a couple of times and it was all delicious. I'm sure there are still some places where they don't purify their water, but most restaurants do now. They actually told us that Montezuma's revenge is kind of a thing of the past now, so I wouldn't worry. Just be smart and don't eat food from any of the street carts or anything.....it looks soooo good, but the local's stomachs are used to the unpurified food on the carts, ours' aren't. Though, we did eat the ice pops they were selling out of a cart one night and still no problems, but I guess we just took a chance with that one (I can't resist local food when I go away and the coconut ices in Mexico are soooooo good).

my friend just came back from the same hotel we stayed at and she had no issues at all. Just a freak thing what happened to me. It something me and my DH can always look back and laugh at, "for sickness....blah blah" was defintely put to the test and he passed with flying colors.
Everyone enjoy your Mexican vaca, hava a drink for me.
