For Those Who Changed Their Names...
I am in the process of changing my last name on everything. To change things like my passport and credit card, do I need additional copies of my marriage certificate. I just looked online and they are like $30 each

Credit cards I just called and they changed them right over the phone for your passport I'm pretty sure you need to mail them the original then they mail it back.

Credit Cards are done over the phone. I am not changing my passport until it expires. You have to pay to get a new passport, so I will travel with a copy of my marriage license and copy of my old driver's license and new. It's not worth paying extra since I will have to renew once it expires.

Hey Alison, they accepted the copy of your certificate?
Sometimes places want an Official Copy that you have to pay for.
Did you do that for your Passport???

i only have 1 copy, everyone that needed a copy i just sent a photo copy, but when i went to ss they wanted to see an orignial but they gave it back to me b4 i left

I havent done my passport yet but DMV and SS just look at the original and give it right back to you-CCs we did over the phone, bank accounts they just looked and handed the original right back also.

Just an FYI If you get married within a year of getting your passport you don't have to pay a fee to change your name.
For other places, if you have any doubts about whether they need a copy or an original/one with a raised seal, just give them a call.

You have to mail in your original certificate for the passport, but it gets mailed right back to you.
If not with the passport then in a separate envelope.
DH and I just renewed our passports and it took only 11 days to get them back.
Everything else, you either show your original or give a copy.
Credit cards are done over the phone.

Credit cards and things of that nature you can probably call or give them a photocopy.
For your passport, they do need an original-They will send it back with your new passport.

I know with your Passport they Need to see the original.

Credit cards you should be able to do over the phone- I did most of mine over the phone.
With the passport that might want to be your last thing to change since you have to mail in the original copy of your marriage certificate.
DMV, banks, and mostly everything else just need to see the original- health insurance might need you to submit just a copy of it to them.
