moving east / job search dilemma

So, as you probably know, I'm not working these days. Got laid off 3 months ago and I have severance through the end of April.

I'm starting to look around for jobs in SF, but its really tough because there are so many people out of work in the bay area (hit harder than most by the dot com bust).

We're planning on moving back east in the fall (Oct/Nov). So I don't know if I should be looking for work in SF or NY...

I think I may start doing both (figuring it may take awhile) and if I can get something in NY, I can stay with my parents until Al follows (the timeline is based on Al's job - thats what we're sticking around for).

But if I get something quickly in NY, that'd wouldn't be so good, as I'd hate to be separated from Al for too long.

So what do I do? Any NJ / NY / LI job resources you can recommend?

I would start looking in NYIt took me From FEb to Dec to find a decent job i liked. Not that that will happen to you but you never know. And like i said whenever you are ready i will send you over the corporate positions.

Lisa, it really depends on what you are looking for, and what level experience you have. I have been looking since end of August, and I've not found anything that interests me nor anyone who can afford me.

Speaking from the experience of going from Bay Area to NY, I cannot find a job in my industry that is at the same level or higher, AND is willing to come close to my salary requirements. I know that I will have to either give up career advancement or the salary (for the time being), in order to find a job and get back into the workplace.

I would start looking NOW, and maybe you can set up preliminary interviews, which will require that you travel back to NY once in awhile. Then you can use those trips to look for a place for you and Al to live.

Definitely post your resume on monster.com or hotjobs.com or flipdog.com or careerbuilder.com to get a feel of what is out there. I have been looking as well and I want to work on LI...which seems to be hard, especially in my industry (design).

I would start now looking for jobs. Mike and I are also in the process of looking for jobs back east. We really want to move to Boston over NY. He is the one that makes the $$, so he really has to find a job first for us to pick up an move. But it takes a long time. He has headhunters looking out for him, but the market is not very good lately. So I would start getting your resume out there...it may take months for someone to notice it.

I was working as a Senior Manager at Schwab. Doing marketing / project management / product development.

Not necessarily looking to stay in financial services but I will if I have to for now.

Lisat: I do project management for financial firms as well. I have a few recruiters who have called me over the past few weeks about various jobs. If you email me I will try to find their emails so you can contact them directly.

Do you have your PMP? I know that is a big draw to my resume. How many years experience do you have?

And in light of the impending T+1 conversion coming up, project offices are pretty hot now despite the down market.

Lisa, just wanted to say good luck in whatever you choose. I cant be much help in this right now, since im out of touch with the job market...

I was looking last year for a while, on and off, and it really is tough out there. I was getting offers that I was just not willing to settle for.

Claud - unfortunately the companies dont see it as their not being able to afford someone. God knows they have the money. They just know they can get someone doing that same job for less. "Why pay more" is their mentality.
I know several people that went from making X amount, to being offered a FRACTION of that. Its just horrid. and its not a matter of the company affording them or not. Its more a matter of : here is what they are paying for that position, and whether its worth it for the applicant to settle.

Sometimes other factors weighed in (less commute time, company perks, gyms, daycare, flex time, etc etc) can make a person settle for a little less.
But I know what we're talking about here is more than a little less !

Hi Lisa, I'm not sure of the terms of your severance...Schwab has a couple of offices in NYC...would you consider working with them here?

A couple of my co-workers have moved and continued working for our parent company. Co. was actually pretty accomodating with their relocations!

I was in Schwab HQ, not in the branches. I wouldn't be qualified to give financial advice
