Hallow-to-Hem Dress - XP from BHB board

Hi ladies! My dress needs to be measured from hallow -to-hem when order. Do you need to have the exact shoes you will wear for that? I feel like 8.5 months before the wedding is too soon to get my wedding shoes just for the measurement.

For you girls that had dresses that required that you be measured from hallow-to-hem, did you buy your shoes? or just used shoes that were the approximate heel height?

My dress needed a hem-to-hallow measurement and you do need your shoes (which I didn't know until I went to order my dress). It was really frustrating because it was the last day I was in town, so I had to order it the next time I was in NY (after finding shoes).

It depends on how strict your bridal shop is. I asked if I could just bring in a pair of 3" heels and then find a pair of 3" heels and they said no -- the platform in front, the structure of the shoe and the heel all affect how you stand in it and they made me bring in my exact shoes.

I wanted to find my dress before my shoes, so I had been unprepared for that.

My dress was hallow to hem. I did not have shoes when I ordered it. I just told them I wont be wearing heels.
I tried it on a few weeks ago with my shoes (sneakers) and its still too long. They will take some inches off the bottom I guess.

Guess I'll be ordering some shoes from zappos.com or shoebuy.com.

I'm def. wearing heels so I know they'll need to measure me with them on.

My sister had a Hallow-to-Hem dress and she used a similiar heel and when she tried on the dress with her bridal shoes the dress was to long. So you should really try and find shoes that your are going to wear on you wedding day. My sisters dress had scalloped edges so the couldn't hem it higher.... they had to stuff her with more tulle to bulk up the dress which brought it off the floor. They dress was dragging before they did that. Good Luck

I needed hollow-to-hem as well... while I did not have my shoes yet I used a pair that I already had and just made sure to get shoes with the same height as those. The length came out perfect!!

I got 3 1/2 in heels - my FH is about 3 1/2 in taller so we'd be the exact same height. I forgot about my hair - I think it's going to be taller than him.

If you know the most common heel height you're comfortable and its a standard heel height, you could just go with another pair of shoes that height... and when it gets closer and you want to buy, you'd just have to be sure to but that same heel height.

I thought the same thing when they told me that too. I just wore an approximate heel size that I will be wearing on my day. My dress is already here, but I still don't have my wedding shoes

I would suggest getting the exact shoes. I wouldn't want to risk the dress being the wrong length, because of the shoe. I had to get my shoes almost 8 months before because of the hallow-to-hem and I remember thinking to myself wow this seems ridiculous. But, at least now I know my shoes are already taken care of. My bridal shop recommended having the exact shoes and I'm glad I did get them. I just feel more reassured about the dress being made correctly.

i was really lucky and apparently all wedding dresses are cut for girls who are 5'8 cuz every dress i tried on the length was PERFECT! which was impt on my dress cuz you cant hem it, its scalloped edging so it had to be right :)

just be careful cause i ordered my dress hollow to hem and i still need it to be hemed 5 inches

my dress place is pretty much the worst on LI but that JMO on them

so just ma sure you ordered it from a good place

because my dress and everything about it was the biggest headache of my wedding planning

Just an update I ordered 6 pairs of shoes after reading everyone's advice. Maybe a bit excessive on the shoe ordering but it was fun

My dress had to be hallow to hem as well. The store told me I need to get my shoes. I felt more comfortable sending it to be hemed with the exact shoes so its the proper length
