QOTD: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
Good morning everyone! Hope you all slept well Thank goodness the work week is half over!
I’ve actually heard people say things like, “…it’s a waste to even get married,” or, “Why do you need a piece of paper to prove that you love each other?” Does that sound familiar to anyone? With so many negative ideas about marriage floating around, it’s a wonder we don’t question if ANY marriage will last! Are there any married couples who are role models to you - you look at them and think to yourself, “I hope we’ll be like them in years to come”?

Re: QOTD: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
My grandparents were married for 52 years. They didn’t fuss or fight, they let everything roll off their backs, they never separated, and they were always content with just being together up until the day my grandfather died. When I was younger visiting their house (which was a few times a week – I always lived 5 minutes away) I would always see the two of them sitting at the table – my grandfather playing with a deck of cards; my grandmother reading the newspaper. The only sound I could hear in the house was the clock ticking. At such a young age, I always wondered, “How could they be content living like this?” Now that I’ve found my soul mate, my perfect man, I realize that if, in 52 years, I’m content sitting in the same room with my husband with not much to talk about, I’ll be the happiest woman in the world.

We are very lucky that both of our parents are happily married too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However, I love when we go out to dinner or out to the movies, or something and we see an "elderly couple" holding hands or kissing... we always say.. "THATS WHAT WE WANT TO BE LIKE" hehehehe

I would have to say that I look up to my parents. They work together 7 days a week and spend all their time together and even though they do fight once in a while [which is normal] they have been through a lot and stuck it out.. They are still in love 31 years later [32 years this year].

my grandparents were married for 54years before my grandmother passed away... and as cliche as it shounds, they loved each other more and more every day. They were (and still are) a HUGE role model in our family to all of us. They are the matriarch and patriarch of our family and i could only wish to have that live.
*i remeber when my grammy was going through chemo, she was laying on the couch and my grampy was sitting in his chair. I was watching him wave to her and wink at her and i was i like" grampy what are you doing??" and he simple stated " i miss her, thats my love over there and I wish she was sitting with me right now"

Re: QOTD: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
My parents.
They got married in 1979 after dating for 3 months. They were both journalists working for the same music mag, and when they had my older sister and I, they'd pack us up and bring us to concerts, interviews, etc.
They have been through so much and you can still see how much love they have for each other. They are such a team--they worked together to give our family a good life and raise three beautiful daughters.
When I grow up I wanna be like them!

My grandparents celebrated 60 years of marriage this past summer. They are definitely an inspiration to us and when I see how they interact, I realize how similar me and FH are to them.

great question! i often feel that its daunting when you hear the statistics about divorce.
we're both lucky enough to have our parents and grandparents as role models. they have both been happily married for over 35 years! my grandparents were just amazing... raising 9 children, owning two businesses together, and later in life, traveling the world.

My FH's parents have been married for 30 years, and you could tell that they still really love each other and that they have that spark still going... they still act lovey dovey with each other, you can tell they're really close....it's very refreshing..I tell FH and them all the time that I look up to them..

Re: QOTD: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
My Bestfriend's uncle has been married to his wife for 20+ years and they always go on vacations together, they do volunteer work together, they go dancing together, and she even cuts his hair (she's a hairstylist)....I think they are a great example. I was talking to this guy who hates being married and he told me that what destroyed his relationship is that he and his wife never did anything together...so that's a goal of mine, to always try to spend time with fh and participate in eachother's interest..... As far as the whole "marriage is just a piece of paper thing" I get the point, but my FH told me that he wants the actual ceremony because of the commitment it symbolizes...that this is the person you want to be with forever. You are pledging your life to eachother infront of those who matter. I think that's a beautiful thing, and its OUR decision.

Re: QOTD: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
I look at my FIL's they've been together since they were 18 and they still love each other so much! The way ffil looks at his wife sometimes makes me want to cry...they are soo sweet (even tho they try to hide it!). They no how to play and laugh and they know how to get over the hard stuff. When I first met FH they were actually seperated but they came back together and they are so much stronger now. Then this past year fmil was diagnosed with lung cancer and had to have surgery and chemo and it was amazing to see both of them support each other at such a hard time. I hope to be exactly like them after 27 years of marriage.

Re: QOTD: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
While FH's parents are still happily married, mine are not, although my mom is remarried and very happy : ). I think my godmothers marriage would be a great example. They went through so many ups and downs and they seem very much in tune and happy.
I hate when people are overly pessimistic and make me feel like I am naive to even believe in marriage. I have always wanted to get married and have a family and I feel like you just have to be realistic about the fact that a marriage might not always be easy.
I am so excited about building my own little family .

Re: QOTD: Wednesday, February 13, 2008
For people around me it is kind of hard, there have been alot of marriages that end because of death. I know my 2 aunts that are still married are OK with their marriages so...... I have to say my parents, being that they split 11 yrs after marriage, legal seperated for reasons I dont not wish to say, they were the BEST of Friends til the day my dad died. My mom was there for him with his sickness and his own mom and sister werent!!! But through thick and thin, til death did them part my parents still loved eachother and stood by eachothers sides. I know they seperated but, they were great parents and in many ways it was like they were never apart. My aunt and uncle were another couple, the couple that NEVER fought!!! They were married almost 11 yrs til he passed at the age of 35, lung cancer and never smoked but, they were always happy when you saw them, did things together and had alot going for them. Sad they never had kids due to miscarriage before he got sick but, they were a great couple during that time. Sorry so long.

This year makes 37 years that my parents have been married. When fh mother found out she is so negative and stated that she has been with her boyfriend for a long time and doesn't see the need to get married. To each his own but I rather follow in the footsteps of my parents and get married.
