Wedding Gifts... Where and When Opened
I regret having attendants/friends opening our gifts, at the reception, and displaying them for guests to see. I have a friend, whose Son and Daughter-in-law opened their gifts when they arrived home from the Honeymoon, with both sets of parents there to watch. As a guest, I would love to see the gifts. As a Bride, I would have liked to have opened my own gifts. Mary MOB

Re: Wedding Gifts... Where and When Opened
I've never seen gifts opened at a wedding. Only at showers.
But the majority of guests at weddings I've been to give cash gifts only. I know that is a NY thing and that in other states it is common to give gifts.
I think open them when Mr. & Mrs. are home.

Re: Wedding Gifts... Where and When Opened
personally ive never been to a wedding where guests bought gifts. Every wedding i've attended everyone gives monetary gifts so they just hand the bride and groom envelopes. I know in other states this is popular but i thought they were just displayed on a table.
but i think its better to open them at home, not spend time at the wedding opening gifts, it will just take time away from other things.

I have never seen gifts opened at a wedding. Most Long Island weddings there are only money or card gifts.

ive never seen gifts given at the reception either but if it was done, i think itd be better to open them at home. opening them at the reception just takes away all the fun.

in NY it is. Everyone just gives envelopes. Gifts are to be given at the bridal shower. I am curious though, what do you get for the wedding after a person already had a shower. I am just asking because i know most showers I've been to by the time of the shower just about everything is gone off their registry. Do they have to do another one? i don't know how that would work. Plus for example, ive put so many things on my registries for the shower, i even went to look the other day to add things but i couldn't really pick other things, i felt like i had way more than enough.

I've never seen any gifts at a wedding, only envelopes with cash money lol I don't think a wedding is a place to open up gifts, whether it be an actual present or in a card. I plan on opening them with FH the next day, at home, recording the gift we receive from each guest. JMO.

Here in Lancaster, gifts are taken from the registries for shower and wedding. And if you have an Amish/Mennonite family connection, even though you and FH aren't Amish/Mennonite, you're likely to get very unique gifts, such as quilts, etc. At my wedding, I had some friends give me really unique gifts from Mexico. The ones I loved the most were embroidered pillowcases, probably done by hand. Mary MOB

oh ok so they give you other things besides whats on the registry, and not typical things you would put on a registry. Yeah because i was thinking that after my shower i dont know how many things will be left, and if guests brought gifts i would have to add ALOT more things after a shower bc i am having 300 guests and i dont think i would even be able to do it. But this makes more sense.

well every place has different traditions and i notice most of them stick. For example here in ny its been like this for a very long time, same for when fh's parents got married too. My parents got married in another country but even there they give monetary gifts, ive noticed in alot of european countries they also do this. Also since NY is full of people from so many countries, alot of these traditions come from there. Maybe the money thing is because of that

no problem and thank you for sharing. I tried to look up how it differs from state to state but couldn't find anything. I am trying to think of other states that give money but not sure which other states do this. But i am guessing it has to be a european tradition. For example most people i know do come from a european background, or even other countries in south america for example. The neighborhood i grew up in was a melting pot, our HS was even in the newspaper for having the most nationalities in a school. Many of the people i know are even first generation americans so their families stuck strongly to traditions from their own countries. We also give money at baptisms and most events like this.

Re: Wedding Gifts... Where and When Opened
09 crashing ----I am from Dominican Republic and over there you give presents (not money) for the wedding, and actually what you do is that you buy the gift from the registra and you live the gift in the store and they deliver all the gifts a couple of days before the wedding... We only give money is to the Bride and Groom that are moving to another country and what we do is that the Bride and groom create a wedding account at a bank and the guests deposit the money in there. So we actually dont take anything to the wedding.

Re: Wedding Gifts... Where and When Opened
I'm Chinese-American (not from NY) and DH is Jewish, both cultures in which giving money is traditional. We're OOT and have been to weddings up and down the East Coast. We've seen presents at weddings before once you start heading south of NY, but have never seen them opened at the weddings. The weddings we've been to have only a few presents (all of them together could fit into a sedan), as most people send them beforehand.

Re: Wedding Gifts... Where and When Opened
I'm African American, and most of my family is from the south. fh same thing... my family does gifts and monetary gifts.. the older family members give gifts.. in fact, my grandparents and fh's parents have both been getting calls from family members wondering how come there were no registry cards in the invites..
my younger family, mostly gives monetary gifts.. but i don't think it's because of it being a NY thing.. and that's never been why I did it.. I give money because I"m too busy to go shopping for the gift.. a check I can write on the way to the reception hall (which I normally find myself doing) i give monetary gifts at bridal showers, baby showers and housewarming's too.. i barely have enough time to shop for me..there just aren't enough hours in the day for me to shop for you to!

I don't know if I've ever seen anyone opening gifts at the wedding either. I think sometimes you can see a few gifts but i'm not sure.
We're planning on opening envelopes and anything else AFTER the HM.....that's partially because the first leg of our Hm is to vegas and I don't want to worry about gambling the money away...LOL.
