I think you do need the paperwork.

My Fi had it appraised when he bought it and he had to supply the paperwork.

I dont know about the time and all that stuff

And if you can make sure they appraise it in front of you. People have tendencies to take your stone out and replace it with one of lesser value. Flaws that cant' be seen by the naked eye.

I have the main # to Macy's 695-4400, I work right down the block and also got my ring appraised there early this year. They were really nice, I don't remember the hours, it may be by appt only. The cost is 1% of the appraisal value.

As far as paperwork, you don't need it for the appraisal itself. The whole point of it is for them to tell you the quality of the stone and what it's worth (for insurance purposes and to make sure you didn't get ripped off) without going by what the seller said.

I had my paperwork from Fortunoff, but I didn't show it to the guy until after he appriased it and we compared it. He appraised one of the Cs (can't remember which one) better than Fortunoff had.

The appraiser didn't take the ring out of my site. Even when he went to clean it in the back, he told me to follow him.

I am curious about the fee. I have had jewerly appraised in the past (DH had my e-ring done) and it's always been a flat fee. Couldn't having the fee based on a percent of the value potentially lead to having a higher and perhaps over stated appraisel? But I am not sure if that's a bad thing if you are using it for insurance since you will be covered for more.

That's a good point about the fees-I'm not sure. But I know Macy's had a cap on their fees.

I don't remember his name, just call them and see what the hours are and if an appt is needed.
It took about 45 mintues I think.
