UK Bride marrying in New York

Hello,

My partner and I are both from the UK, but are getting married in New York in September 2008.

The only sticking point at the moment, is being able to obtain a marriage license. We know that we have to get it, and not use it for 24 hours, but we need to pay for it with a money order. I have no idea what a money order is, or how we go about getting one - we do not have a US bank account, so i don't know if this will be a problem.

Can anyone help?

my suggestion would be to go to a bank that is international...you should be able to get one there....otherwise....most places accept travelers checks....I would call ahead and ask to see if maybe that is an option?

Thanks! I've only just discovered this website, and it's fantastic!

We're getting married at All Souls Church and then having the reception at Tavern on the Green, Central Park. I haven't been to either, so if anyone knows anything about them, that'll be great. We've just booked them from what we've seen on their websites!

I have never been tot he church, but Tavern is beautiful...>i am sure you wi ll be very happy there.....The food is good and the service is amazing...

all the girls are slowy waking up on here....it is usally its busiest in the evening hours NY time....did you talk to or pick out any other vendors?

welcome! you can get money orders at i believe a post office, and other places like CVS (pharmacy)

Welcome and congrats on your engagement. I think your best bet is to go to your bank and talk to them about it. They should be able to give you a accurate currency exchange, etc.

welcome to the boards. Any check cashing store will give you a money order, you don't need to be a citizen to get one

you can get a money order from a lot of places.. by me the check cashing place does it and i believe the drug store does too.. so it shouldn't be a problem!

Has anyone been to All Souls Church? I've heard lots of good things about Tavern on the Green, but nothing so far on All Souls? It looks lovely from the website.

Welcome to the boards! Definitely check out Citibank or HSBC in London. I'm sure they can do a money order or a certified check for you.

Thank you so much for the link - it's great to know that someone had a fantastic time there. I'm sure it will all be fantastic, i'm just a bit anxious, as we haven't actually been to the venue! A bit silly some may say!

Tavern is a true landmark in NYC - great choice and your wedding will be spectacular!!!

As for the money order, no worries. They are sold at all local post offices and some convenience stores and can be paid for in cash so no worry about not having a bank account here. Just be sure when you change your money you put some aside for the marriage license. Also, I paid cash for my marriage license so that may be an option too.
