NWR: Teachers who did the ATS-P Video

I have two weeks to get this video done.

I am going to do the lesson with a 4th grade class that I don't normally have so I am looking for something simple that won't cause any difficulty.

I really want to stay away from math.

Any suggestions???????????

It has to be between 20-30 min. The teaching point must be clear in the video and they must see at least 10 minutes of nonwhole group instruction. I guess that means take a small group and help them with the activity??????

Any help or suggestions would be great. I just want to pass this and get it over with!

Thanks

What about some sort of writers workshop lesson? You could do a mini-lesson then give them time to write, then share at the end.

I was going to say to do some sort of graphing activity. I did a great pictographs lesson with my 4th graders and they loved it- but you dont want to do math.

What are some of the things they are doing right now in class? I would suggest doing something they are familiar with. That way they are successful

Pictographs seem easy enough. I just don't want difficult math.

How did you introduce it???

I wish I coul do the lesson with my own classes, but there is just no way I can.

Thanks

'08 crasher..yeah you can do graphing using like lucky charms or M&Ms

an easy lesson thats always good is a compare contrast lesson..like using the "true story of the 3 little pigs"..read that book then do a venn diagram comparing the original story to the other version...that book is pretty popular so if you dont want to use that you can always read one of the cinderella stories

Re: NWR: Teachers who did the ATS-P Video

I started off by intorducing a pictograph and activating prior knowledge then together as a class we created a simple pictograph on our favorite ice cream flavors. I had them tell me everything included in a pictograph (labels, title, key, etc.) The students cam up and put an ice cream cone under their fav. flavor- graph was set up on board using fun tack. I then asked them questions pertaining to our graph.

After that, students were given a blank pictograph sheet and a class list. They had to come up with a topic, poll the class, and then create a pictograph based on their data. The kids had a ton of fun with it, but it can get a little noisy because they are moving around. You could always eliminate this part and do something else.

I will try and think of other things I have done with my class! HTH

I did mine 2 yrs ago and the directions said that there had to be some sort of group/cooperative working. I'm kindergarten, so I did a story sequencing in groups of four, but maybe you could have them do venn diagrams in groups (if this is even still a requirement?). I like the comparing 2 versions of the same story... you can really prep the kids too, by taking another story w/ two versions and having them do it the week before. HTH

Re: NWR: Teachers who did the ATS-P Video

i have to say that i think it's a bit risky to do the ATS-P video with a class you don't know very well. . . . . you want this to be your best and to be your best you have to know the kids and how they might react, etc. etc. also sometimes the kids get a little hyper when they see the video camera so that can change it up a bit.... do you havea group of kids you know better?

i recommend a quick mini-lesson, then a group activity where you're moving around the room with the kids and then bring them back to tie it all together...

i did my lesson with kindergartners for the video and it went great. for 4th grade there are so many possibilities. i would do some sort of math lesson, even though you don't like math... it's very easy to do it hands on. or how about a mapping lesson for social studies... or some sort of writer's workshop..
