caterer dilemma continues.... seems like we might need a lawyer

to not bore those who already know the background: i provided links to my previous posts on the matter
my wedding was 30 days ago, and we still have not received our $500 from the MIA caterer. dh calls her yesterday to let her know that today is the deadline or else we'll be contacting a lawyer. SHE HAD THE NERVE TO TELL DH THAT THE REASON SHE HADN'T SENT THE MONEY IS BECAUSE HER SON TRIED TO COMMIT SUICIDE "THIS WEEK".
yes, i am very sad that ANYONE in this world would even conceive that suicide is an answer. and my heart does break for the woman, being that i am a mother also.
but according to her, this just happened!! what about the previous three weeks??
i don't know if to feel bad for her or to be mad as hell

I agree with the above posters. Granted, this possible tragedy [man i hope it's true b/c if it ain't, she's purely EVIL] might forgive someone's train of thought for a few days, but it didn't happen a month ago...it happened VERY recently. Just take her to court.

Go to small claims court - don't get a lawyer. It'll cost you more than $500 just for the to meet with you once and write a complaint.
I'd file in small claims court and be done with it. Make sure you take accurate notes / records of every correspondence / communication you have with her -- phone calls -- dates, times, what was said, etc. Follow every phone call up with a letter to her.

I would definitely take her to court! Thats ridiculous...the timing is not right all together with her. I can understand feeling bad for her...but at the same time I really hope that she isnt lying about it b/c that would be WAY out of the box! Get your money back and make a point to detail your issues with the BBB

Depends on the jurisdiction - you can't always recoup your court costs. Doesn't hurt to ask in court, though.
