Anyone have guests or live in Queens, Brooklyn etc.. & having wedding in Suffolk

Is anyone from Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx or Manhattan or having a majority of their guests from these areas and having their wedding in Suffolk county? Were you woriied about the distance or people driving home that far after having a few drinks? What about guests that do not have cars, etc.... How did you make it work????

Re: Anyone have guests or live in Queens, Brooklyn etc.. & having wedding in Suffolk

I am.
All of my Family are from the city. (BP too) I have started to look into an inexpensive hotel for the night of the wedding, where my guests can crash for the night. My wedding will be over after 1 am, and I'd feel better knowing all of my guests are safe, and not driving home tired, or tipsy!

Ask you hall for hotel recommendations, and see if they have any ideas. Good luck on your wedding!

I am from Queens, and our families are spread out in NY. So either way, people will have to travel. I am having it where I want - people who want to be there will come whether they have to travel or not.

Not Suffolk, but all my guests traveled from Bklyn, Staten Island, New Jersey, and Queens. Our church was in Bklyn, and our reception was in Long Island.

Don't worry about it - people will travel to be with you and your future husband.

While it's generous to offer transportation, it may be costyl, and people will find rides!

I am I am....you'll always hear comments from someone. Remember you can never please everyone.

We figured what's another 10-15 mins of travel time to do it in Suffolk and the people that love us will be there.

Thanks. I guess as long as I provide some hotel options I will be fine.

What if it is a Sunday wedding. Then I don't see people wanting to stay over because they might have work the next day

I have a lot of family in queens so we're going to offer a hotel just in case they don't want to make the long drive home.

i actually have kind of the opposite - i live in queens and my church and reception are minutes from my house but the majority of FHs family is from suffolk. we are going to block out some rooms at a nearby hotel and if they want to stay - great

Re: Anyone have guests or live in Queens, Brooklyn etc.. & having wedding in Suffolk

I'm from Queens and the majority of my guests are from Queens. when I was looking for RH's I did not even think about Suffolk because of the distance.

I looked at RH's in Queens and reasonable Nassau County ones. I didn't want to hear it from some people complaining about the distance. But more importantly, I wanted them to have fun & not have to think about the long ride home.

Our wedding was in Suffolk and much of DH's family lives in Queens. It's really not that far. Like any other guest, they were responsible for getting themselves there and getting themselves home. As for drinking alcohol, they're all adults and should be responsible enough to take these things into consideration. It's not anything for you to worry about, you've got enough on your plate.

I'd say about 90% of our guests are from out of town - some from Brooklyn and Queens, but the rest spread over NJ, CT, MA, FL, GA, CA, etc ... We're blocking hotel rooms, so they have the option to stay over, but if they want to drive at night that's up to them. Or they could try to crash with another family member.

Our wedding was a Sunday Evening, people started heading out around 10:30 (our RH ended at 12:30) - so don't worry....it's not an inconvenience.

Re: Anyone have guests or live in Queens, Brooklyn etc.. & having wedding in Suffolk

I'm making people travel 3 hours for my (still hypothetical!) wedding in Connecticut, so I'm not against it. But remember to be realistic about the traffic: I live in Brooklyn and went to look at one place in Suffolk on a weekday afternoon, and it took 3 hours to get there. If you're getting married on a holiday weekend, it might be even worse. You know what traffic on the Belt and the Southern State is like! So it's okay to ask people to travel, but be truthful about how long it will take to get there, or you'll have some grumpy guests.

Don't worry about it. Our wedding is in Babylon and most of our guests are in NJ, CT, Queens and Bklyn. We know they'll make the drive.

Though we were torn between East Wind and the Venetian Yacht Club, we did chose VYC bc it wasn't AS far as East Wind.

Don't worry too much

I am too, although ours is going to be next year, so I can tell you how bad the traffic is.

We're trying to figure out how to handle this problem too.

We're doing ours in smithtown, at Temple Beth Sholom, for a whole slew of reasons. The bulk of our friends will be coming from manhattan. Apparently, the shul is 2-3 minutes from the train station, so we figure people who don't want to stay out here can take the train. Also, on the merits of the phrase "party bus" FW may want a party bus.

For us, because we want to have who we want to have (around 200 people) and a kosher wedding, going with a shul, and really with this particular shul made sense. The caterer is family, and he and his father catered my sister's bat mitzvah, my bar mitzvah, and my parents' wedding (!). So it was a great deal for a great space and an amazing sound spread. But if it's a choice between a further away location or not having the budget for everyone to come, I'd rather people take the train (or party bus).
