NWR: my job
first things first...
i am in school to be an editor (video) for commercial /tv production...possibly wedding videography down the line.
i work for a production company in manhattan...its a company/.studio//that houses a few different projects at once which is fine an dandy.
However, i was promised hands on exp starting september...havent recevied any BUT the project they told me about was handed over to a girl that I got a job. which im fine with bc im her friend but it goes to show me that they dont keep promises.
The bosses assistant is a HUGEEEE ***** and she keeps getting worse. like she treats me and 2 of my friends here horribly. We found out too that she was the reason that a girl who worked with us got fired/let go...and we are probably next...bc they way she treats us is how she treated her. (she has a lot ofpull)
Lastly...i gave up a lot..(i took a pay cut, switched my entire schedule around, pay to travel to the city instead of workin literally 5 minutes away) and now i think i made the wrong choice. what do you all think.
SORRY this is long...
ps...they are super sketchy here...not kiddin. like they fired a guy on teh spot after he worked here for 2o something years...they dont tell us when someone is let go...i mean..cmon. this is a big name company...)

Re: NWR: my job
Have you tried looking for something similar in a different company? Is there someone you can talk to that is higher up than this woman/meanie!? I would stick it out, because reagardless of whether or not you're getting that "hands-on" experience, it will still look good on your resume that you worked there. In the meantime, while you're sticking it out, look elsewhere in the same industry. There is no reason for you to be treated like crap by some woman on a power-trip and there is no reason for you to lay down and take it. Good luck!

Re: NWR: my job
You say that you're still in school. So this job is an internship / part-time thing? And are you using it mainly to get some experience and good references for after you graduate? If so, maybe you should stick with it. I mean, nothing is worth being very unhappy, and planning a wedding is stressful enough without the added stress with a boss who's a real A**, but if it's not too many hours a week, and you're making good connections, then if I were you, I'd remind myself that that's why I'm there and make the best of it for the time being.
On the other hand, if it's a full-time job and you took it hoping to move up within the company... is this really even the company you want to move up in? It doesn't sound like they treat their employees right. And they pass you over for opportunities that it sounds like you deserve. You don't want to be unemployed right now (I know how expensive weddings are!), but could you look around on the internet and ask around discreetly to see if there's anything else out there? At least looking for something might make you feel like you're taking charge of the situation, like, "okay this place may suck but at least I have options."
Sorry if I'm rambling, but I'm at work now myself and can only write in short spurts!

Re: NWR: my job
Aww, I just feels to you like everyone loves their job because you're having a tough time with your own. Like when you and your fiance have a fight, and all you see on tv and on the streets is couples kissing and holding hands and you're like... "Stop that! You're so annoying! I hate you!"
I bet if you started a "Tell me a funny story about your job" thread, you'd get a lot of good stories and see that everyone hates work sometimes.

Re: NWR: my job
ugh i am so sorry that you feel this way - i hated my job for six years at waldbaum's so i know how it really affects all aspects of your life
i know nothing about your career path or anything like that but just as a concerned friend - i say you try to look for something ASAP. . . dont give up your end goal but just look for something else in the field - maybe ask for some help at school. . .
not having job security is one of the worst feelings . . . you need a place that is going to HELP YOU reach your goal, not hold you back. . . you are working really hard in school and it sounds like this job is just making it difficult for you . . .you dont need that!
i would look for another place and stay where you are until you find it. . .
i'm sorry babe!
you can always come work with me! lol

Re: NWR: my job
Sorry Diane, def start looking and using your connections - if you think they're discreet. You DO NOT want to burn any bridges, that is a career killer.
Rent Devil Wears Prada and see if it makes you feel any better...
And I HATE my job. Hate, hate, hate my job. Hate it. Did I mention that I hate my job? Because I do.
