amoxicillin question
hello. i came down with a bad case of strep throat somewhere between friday night and saturday morning. i went to urgent care on saturday and the strep test was positive. so the dr prescribed me amoxicillin, which is fine, thats what i normally get for this kind of illness. what got me was the dosage. he wanted amoxicillin 1000mg twice a day... it doesn't come in that dosage, so i got the equivelant from cvs... (2) amoxicillin 500mg twice a day... does anyone know if this is too high of a dose? i am 5'4 and 120lbs. the most i've ever taken was (1) amox 500mg twice a day, but never 2 pills at a time twice a day. i confirmed with the office and thats def what he wrote for. i called cvs and the pharmacist claimed thats a normal dosage, but from what i have seen online its high and my aunt whos a nurse looked it up and said its 300mg higher than whats recommened for a severe diagnosis, ahh. whatcha think? i am still nauseous, but that could be from the sickness or medicine. i will call the office again tomorrow and see if they think the med can be whats causing me to vomit, and maybe switch to 1 pill twice a day. ughhh, i hate being sick. i just want to feel better already :( ~lacey

Re: amoxicillin question
Hi Lacey,
I agree with your aunt that 1000 mg twice a day is higher than normal. The usual dosage is between 500-875 mg twice daily.
1000 mg, according to one of my drug books (Nursing student), is indicated for patients with H. pylori infections, and is combined with other meds as well. H. pylori infects the lower GI tract, not the throat.
You should definitely call to make sure he didn't make a mistake.
One of the side effects of amoxicillin is nausea and vomiting so that WOULD explain why you're feeling so nauseated!
Hope you get better soon! Get lots of rest and eat healthy!

Re: amoxicillin question
i called the office and they said that the dose was normal, and that whatever info i looked at might be old, bc with antibiotic resistancy that dose is correct...but i am taking one pill twice a day anyways. i am a tiny girl, and taking so much--i think--is what was causing me to throw up. the girl on the phone said that i could take up to 2000mg twice a day--yeah, OK, 4 grams of amox normal...i dont get it. but 1 twice a day has always worked for me, so that is what i will take. thanks for sharing your knowledge!

How often do you get strep throat? My daughter used to get such severe ear infections that they skipped amox. and went for higher doses of harder stuff b/c if they didn't, she would go through a round with amox. and then move on to the next anyway. I would do what they say as it is possible that your infection is HIGH thus the higher dose...and with antibiotic resistancy, it's absolutely possible you need the higher dose.

i don't get sick often, i have built up a good immunity bc i work in childcare and i am always exposed to stuff. i did have strep throat about 6 months ago, which i told the dr, so maybe that had something to do with the dosage. i threw up again early this morning, ugh. so i only took 1 pill this morning. i dont feel nauseous at all today, which is very nice. i am feeling a lot better, just a little weak. thanks for all the well wishes, girls! eta i should say that the dr i saw was at an urgent care center, and he did not have any of my records, this is the first dr visit for me here in NC.

Re: amoxicillin question
If you do skip doses let your physician know. It's always important to take meds like this exactly as directed... and to use it for the prescribed amount of time... no less.
Bacteria can be SO tricky lol! If you don't finish your prescription, they often come back even stronger... that might be why your doc increased the prescription. So let him know exactly how you've decided to take it just to ensure that it's enough to successfully get rid of the infection.
Again, good luck!
