Re: domincan republic
My cousin was just there 2 weeks ago. They stayed at Secrets for their HM. Is that where you guys are going? I can ask him about shopping.

Re: domincan republic
I don't remember there being any high end shopping. If you take a cab into town, you can visit some jewelry stores that are pretty nice, but nothing that blew my mind. Oh, and EVERYTHING is negotiable there, so bargain away. And if you can, charge your purchases, the exchange rate I got from AMEX was much better than what I was getting at banks in the DR.

Re: domincan republic
just got back!! No high end shopping! Markets are overpriced. They wanted oer 1300 dollars for an amber braclet. This island is more expensive then the others I have been too.

Re: domincan republic
I've heard Punta Cana is one of the BEST areas to go (resorts). Haven't heard much about the shopping..but I did hear that you shouldn't give $ to the kids that come around the resort..because they tend to bombard you and it can get pretty frightening.

Re: domincan republic
Sorry to be a bummer, Girls...REALLY sorry but I feel like I should let you know this.....
I tell people to avoid the DR because I was assaulted by a hotel worker when I was there on vacation. The guy was convicted, has spent the past six years in prison, but is up for parole and the hotels have hired him back already to do the same job as he was doing when I was assaulted.
Plus because of my experience I've been contacted by the State Dept in the DR several times to help other girls who've had this happen to them (help with lawyers, recommendations, translators, embassy officials) and it happens way more often than you'd think... PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL THERE....THEIR HOTEL SECURITY AGENCIES ARE CROOKED AND THEY CAN PAY OFF THE POLICE AND DISTRICT ATTORNEYS EASILY....
Please be very careful...I know these things can happen to anyone, anywhere, but seriously if this guy who did it to me was convicted of a sex crime against a tourist and then is being hired back to work in the same capacity, what does this say about the hotel industry's willingness to protect its guests??

Re: domincan republic
I've been there 3 times b/c it is just so cheap to go to the all inclusives there. After my most recent trip there...March of this year...I swore I'd never go back. Beaches are beautiful but the food can literally make you sick. It was bad all times I went and I just decided my last trip there that it's just not worth it to go back.
There is no high end shopping whatsoever. I personally would not feel safe leaving the resort grounds.

Re: domincan republic
I went to Secrets Excellence for a vacation with my FH back in April. It was a very beautiful resort. We didn't do much shopping outside of the resort. They have people that come onto the property on some of the nights and set up a market in the main area of the resort. There are also a few stores located in the resort itself (a jewlery store, cigar shop and souvenirs). If there are any other questions I can answer for you, just let me know.
