Our 4/14/06 Wedding - UPDATED!! The Westbury Manor, 12th Night, Mia, Golden Moments, Rev. Deb, High Voltage & PROOFS!!

We had an amazing wedding and I have to say I would have been completely lost if it wasn’t for LIW. Everything that I know about wedding planning came from this board.

Like many people have said, make sure that you do not stress on your wedding day and try to enjoy it as much as you can. It goes by so quickly. I’m a huge worrywart, but I just went with the flow and had a great time.

The most amazing thing about my wedding is that it brought everyone in our families together, in a way I never would have thought possible. My mom’s family lives OOT and had never met DH’s family. Also, my parents are divorced. Everyone got along so well! I keep hearing from everyone what a wonderful time they had and how much they liked meeting each other. We had a RD and brunch the next morning and I would really recommend it if you can do it, b/c I felt like I got to spend a lot of time with our OOT family and other guests.
It’s almost 3 months later and guests are still telling us what a great time they had at our wedding.

Rehearsal Dinner – La Novella in East Meadow A+
My in-laws love this restaurant and were discouraged after trying to find a location closer to the hotel where everyone stayed. They stopped here on their way home from looking at other places and got a great price at a restaurant they know is great. The service and food were both excellent. They give you a TON of food and it was all delish! Some of our guests said it was the best Italian food they’ve ever had. We had a private room and everything was perfect!

NOW……I go back to the hotel room, DH goes back home with is parents. I spend a few hours hanging out with my dad and step-mom who are also staying in the hotel. Feel pretty tired, so head back to my room around midnight. Read for a few minutes, turn the lights off…BAM! I’m wide awake! I seriously got NO SLEEP AT ALL the night before my wedding. I’m prone to this, unfortunately, but for some moronic reason I didn’t think to bring tylenol pm or anything with me. Since I’m used to it, I knew I could get through the day fine, I do it all the time…but I was worried about how I would look :( When Mia came I told her she had a big project on her hands...to make me look like I had slept! But more on that later…

Dress, slip, bra: Burtons A+
Dress: Alfred Angelo A
I had no appointment at Burton’s, my MIL & I were trying to kill time in between appointments and stopped here. They made us feel welcome and were very accommodating from the start. Carol helped me pick the perfect dress and it was less money than the ones I saw at David’s (I wanted to spend as little as possible on my dress). When I went for my second fitting I discovered I had lost some weight and the seamstress took my dress in and everyone stayed late while we waited to make sure it fit before I left. On the day of my dress fit perfectly and I received a lot of compliments on it. I highly recommend Burtons!

And I just have to say my dress is by Alfred Angelo and I loved it. After I bought my dress, I read that this brand was not very good quality and has gone down-hill recently. I have to say that my dress was gorgeous, the beading and embroidery were beautiful and I had no problems with it at all. I would not hesitate to recommend their dresses.

Bra (corset): A lot of people have asked me about this so I’m including a pic I found online. I bought this through Burton’s and it was perfect.

Shoes, purse & jewlery: Sandy’s Shoes A++
Between me and my MIL we went to this store probably 5 times and had excellent service each time. I wanted open toed shoes that would be comfy and had been to practically every store on LI looking for the perfect pair. The people at Sandy’s Shoes helped me pick out something that I loved. I raved about them to MIL who still needed shoes and so she went and found her shoes as well. We came back to look for jewelry and on a busy weekend afternoon, I had very personalized, attentive service while they patiently helped me pick out the perfect jewelry & purse to go with my dress. We were there for at least an hour. About a week before the wedding I realized I had never purchased slippers for the ceremony and I found some here right away. They gave me inserts to make my feet more comfortable and took off the string on them and added a cute little sparkly piece of material to make them look bridal. This was free and done in about 10 minutes while I waited. I would recommend them to anyone looking for shoes or accessories.

Tiara: Barron’s Tri-County A
I found the perfect tiara here. They were patient with me as I searched for the “perfect’ tiara…yet had no clue exactly what it was I was looking for! I was very happy with it and the service they provided.

Veil:
My veil was my something borrowed from my aunt who recently got married. It was perfect – I wanted something simple but still pretty and "bridal". I’m not rating it b/c it was free & I have no idea what brand it is but I had to include a pic!!

Rings: Roberts Jewlers on Old Country Road in Westbury A+
My DH went out one day to start “looking at rings”. I think this is the only place he went, and right away he found my ring for an amazing price. We both bought our wedding bands here, too. I’ve been here a bunch of times to get my ring sized and cleaned, etc. and I really like their service and work. I would highly recommend them.

Limo: Sir Oliver A
We booked our limo about a month or so before the wedding because we couldn’t decide if we wanted one (and DH would just go in a regular car) or two. I had called for prices and then got busy and didn’t get back to them for several weeks but they still remembered me and the quote they had written up for me. They were extremely helpful & courteous everytime I spoke with them on the phone. We just wanted a simple 10-passenger limo for an inexpensive price and that’s what we got. On the day of, I was running a few minutes late b/c of pictures. Our driver waited about 15-20 minutes past the 15 minute leeway pick-up time. I panicked b/c I didn’t have any extra money on me, but when my dad asked about the extra fee the driver said not to worry about it, it was for a wedding and not too far of a drive. For our pick-up at the end of the night they upgraded us for free to an Escalade SUV (not limo) instead of a town car. I think they will always upgrade you if they have a car available. Both cars were spotless. I would highly recommend them.

Flowers: Unique Image Florist A+
The owner is a friend of DH and I couldn’t be happier with our flowers which is funny because flowers were never a big priority for me. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted for our CPs or bouquets or anything yet I was extremely picky about it! Tim was very patient with me and helped me find the perfect CP. When the first sample wasn’t quite what I wanted he made up a second sample for us and we knew it was the one. They included my grandmother’s baby ring as my something old, and it came out great! On the day of everything was delivered promptly. We were so pleased with everything, the boutinierres, bouquets, and CPs were gorgeous! Even though I had spent all morning getting my hair and make-up done, when the flowers arrived, it was the first time that I felt like it was my wedding day and I started to cry they were so beautiful. He decorated our cake at the Westbury Manor and decorated the place card table for us and we were blown away by the flowers. I’m not sure if they still do weddings..FM me if you want info I can find out for you.

Tuxes: Towne & Country: B+
DH wanted to use Towne & Country b/c he had used them for tuxedos many times in the past when he’s been in wedding parties and also in hs for his prom. He went with his parents one night when I had to work and made another appointment to meet with someone who was supposedly more knowledgeable about picking out tuxes than the people there that night. When we went back for our appointment this person wasn’t even there. The guy there was very accommodating and helpful but I think we were both not 100% excited about his suggestions. The owner ended up popping in and we asked her for help and she came up with colors/styles that we loved. My dad was nervous about his tux fitting since he was only able to try it on the day before but it looked great on him and all the guys looked really nice! I would give them an A but it was annoying that we made an appointment to meet with a specific person and they weren’t there! Otherwise they were great.

Invitations:
We ordered them through a friend of our family and in hindsight, I really wouldn’t recommend it!! It was frustrating b/c when there were any problems we felt really uncomfortable b/c of the family member connection. For example, there was a mistake when we received our invitations (my dad’s name was misspelled) and she paid for the new ones out of her own pocket b/c it was her mistake which I think the right thing to do but we felt funny about it. They did come out beautifully but I would recommend going through a store or someone you don’t know!

Favors: Heart Wine Bottle Stoppers from Favorwarehouse.com – A
I ordered these online from this website b/c they had the best price. They came very quickly and the customer service was great!

Photo Box: My FIL made this, he did such a great job!

Video: Golden Moments (Pat) so far A+
We decided at the last minute to book a videographer..literally about a week before our wedding. We wanted a record of our entire day (ceremony & reception) but no extras like baby photos, interviews, etc. We also wanted the complete footage and needed an extra DVD b/c my parents are divorced. Golden Moments offered us the best price of the 3 or 4 places I called based on rec's from this site, and especially for the quality of his work the prices are extremely reasonable. Pat was very patient with me on the phone with my million questions and offered for me to call again with any questions or to let him know if I needed help with anything (vendors, etc.) This was before we booked him! We decided to go with him and I just had to wait for the contract to arrive and then return it with the deposit. By the time I got the contract and mailed it back to him, it was the week of our wedding and Pat hadn’t received our deposit yet. I called him and found this out and apologized. He said his wife asked him what he would have done if he had never received the deposit and he said he would have shown up anyways and if we’d changed our minds he would have just left. lol But shows that Pat is an amazing vendor who will go out of his way to be there for you. On the day of I literally did not notice he was there which is exactly what we wanted…DH HATES when videographers are in-your-face at weddings and this is why we almost didn’t book one. Our unedited footage was ready when we got back from our HM. He caught everything and I can’t wait to see the final version. Just the raw footage was great! His prices are extremely reasonable and offers so much compared to others for the same price.
ETA: received our edited DVD a few weeks ago and it's beautiful! When you receive your unedited footage Pat asks you about how long you woud like the edited version to be, and to watch it and let him know if there is anything you deifnitely want or do NOT want included in the edited DVD. Our package included HM pics, baby pics, etc. but DH and I just really wanted a record of our wedding so we decided not to include those extras. Dumb? Maybe but it's what we decided.
We could tell from the raw footage that the final product would turn out great and it did. We also did not specify and specific songs to include, and the songs they picked out are great. Of course, you can hear our actual first dance song and other songs during the reception. Pat recently opened a 2nd office which is in Nassau County, btw. So once again, I would highly, highly recommend Pat and Golden Moments. If you are undecided about getting a video, DO IT!
Photography: Twelfth Night. Before A+. Night before, C, day of A+

Ok, I will get this out of the way 1st. Maybe I am being overly sensitive I don’t know but even though I love Twelfth Night, one thing really rubbed me the wrong way with them. The night before our wedding, on the way to our rehearsal dinner, I got a call from our photographer to confirm. Then, he mentioned that they would love to offer a second photographer to us (a student), for a very reduced price. Maybe this is the norm for them, but when we booked I had wanted 2 photographers and FH didn’t and we decided not to b/c of the $$, and I just felt really put on the spot to be asked this at 7pm the night before our wedding! I should have said just that but since I wanted it and wasn’t thinking clearly, I asked DH`s opinion. We talked for a minute and realized we both felt pressured and put on the spot and didn’t want to add anything like that on at the last minute. It was a good deal, I just felt like they could have mentioned it at a better time, in a more professional way. I was just trying to relax and enjoy our special night. It turns out they brought the photographer to the wedding for free anyways, which was nice, but why didn’t they just do that in the first place?!!

Ok, now that that is said, I otherwise loved working with Twelfth Night. Dom is great I met with him a few times and everyone there was really patient with me and my millions of neurotic questions and concerns. When I found out we couldn’t use Dom for our wedding (b/c we had the 1- photographer package), I panicked and they sat with me while I looked at a bunch of albums, proofs and DVDs comparing and contrasting Mike’s work with Dom’s. Turns out I couldn’t tell a difference but I really appreciated their patience. So we ended up going with Mike who was great.

The day of our wedding, I was really nervous about having our pictures taken b/c 1- I feel like I am not photogenic at all, 2 – I always have my eyes closed in pictures and 3 – I tend to be shy and uncomfortable being in the spotlight. From the moment Mike arrived in my hotel room, he made me feel so comfortable. He started snapping away and did a great job of giving me instructions without making me feel awkward or stupid! Pretty soon, I started to feel comfortable having my picture taken. When we got to the WM to meet my husband, he did a great job taking all of our pictures before the ceremony so that we could enjoy the CH. They made sure to ask ahead of time about our families, did we want table shots.. Did we want shots with specific friends, etc. Also my parents are divorced and they made sure it was ok for them to be in the same room together or not, in pictures together, etc. Even tho it was not a problem, I never thought of this and really appreciate that they asked ahead of time and also double-checked the day of to be sure. Mike made us all feel comfortable in front of the camera and took some truly amazing, beautiful shots. I was *so* worried about our pics, even tho I love their work, b/c like I said I am usually unhappy with how I look in pics, but I am SO pleased with them.
Mike came up to us during the reception to ask if we wanted any outside shots by the fountain. It only took maybe 10 or 15 minutes and they came out great!

Make-up and Hair – Mia (bridal l o u n g e) – A++
I had a trial with Mia in February and felt instantly at ease around her. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted b/c I never wear make-up so I showed Mia some pictures of make-up and hairstyles. Even though I was somewhat vague, Mia did an incredible job and I was instantly so relieved about how I would look at my wedding. As you may remember, when I saw the pictures of the trial, I was worried about how the eye make-up showed up in some of the pictures. I emailed Mia who made notes on my color chart. The day of she did a PERFECT job with my hair and make-up I was SO pleased with it. She made me feel beautiful. Even though I got NO sleep whatsoever the night before my wedding and was worried that I would look horrible, Mia made me look my best and not tired at all. Mia stayed and fixed my make-up several times after I decided to eat later than I should have and messed up my foundation/lipstick. She was there right until we left the hotel room and I truly don’t know what we would have done without her that day. She helped adjust my veil and my dress while we were taking pictures. Mia is a wonderful person and so easygoing and calming. She was a joy to have there on my wedding day and I highly, highly recommend her!!

The Wingate Inn, Garden City – B-

The good stuff: the rooms we had were very nice, and clean too. Jessica and Kirsten did a great job of arranging a mini-van for us at the last minute. I worked with Jessica to bloc our rooms and she was very helpful and always available for me to talk to. She really took away a lot of potential stress for me during planning b/c she was so helpful and easygoing. One piece of advice, it seems to be easier to contact her via email as opposed to calling her. I had a the jr. 1-bedroom suite and it was really nice, lots of space and perfect for pictures…the French doors were so pretty.

The bad: overall I feel that the Wingate is very disorganized as far as their staff and coordinating everyone’s jobs together. I had arranged months before our wedding to have the bar open for an after party. The day before our wedding I get a message asking if we want the bar for our after-party or not? It worked out 100% fine, but it stressed me out when I thought it was already taken care of.
When I booked the mini-van, they said they would just charge it to my room. My dad had paid for my room and I didn’t want him to pay for the mini-van too so I called them back. I didn’t hear from them before I checked-in so I mentioned it at the desk. They said they had no idea how to find out about it but they would leave a message w/ the right person about it. Every time I went by the desk I tried to take care of this and no one knew how to take the charge off my room and just charge my cc! The morning after the wedding I mentioned it again so they charged my cc for it and gave me a copy of my dad’s receipt showing that part paid. I found out after the fact that later when my dad checked out they charged him for the mini-van too. My dad and I both were in touch with them after the wedding, it took about a month & my dad threatening to get in touch with his lawyer for his cc to be reimbursed. I honestly don't know if I would recommend them b/c they have some great people on staff but are too disorganized as a whole there.

DJ: High Voltage – A
Vinny was our DJ and he did a great job. Vinny and his assistant arrived before our ceremony & got set-up with no problem (they did the music for the ceremony, CH & reception). We gave him a must-play list but told him to really just go with what he thought, it was more of a suggested play list. He played lots of the songs on it and then just did his thing. He had so many people out on the dance floor the entire night. He played some slow songs, but not too many, which is just what we wanted. He helped reassure us that our 1st dance song and cake cutting songs were “ok” (they were non-traditional). We also decided to go with give-aways which I know a lot of people think are cheesy but we like and they were really nice. They included champagne glass maracas, white top hats and sunglasses..I don't remember everythign but it wasn't too much or overboard at all. High Voltage is a great DJ company and they are very reasonably priced.

Officiant: Rev. Deb Viola A+
We found Reverend Deb on this site and I’m so happy we did. We wanted a ceremony that wasn’t religious, but still spiritual and personal. Rev. Deb met with us and we felt so comfortable with her right away. When we described that we didn’t know exactly what we wanted for our ceremony (except what I said above) she “got it” right away and made us feel confident about how it would turn out. She kept in touch with us and made our ceremony so easy to work on, she was another no stress vendor!
DH had decided to write our own vows, and it was so nice I’m glad he talked me into it.
I have to say that our ceremony was a big hit and SO many of our guests raved about it. People I would never expect to even care about a wedding ceremony told us it made them cry & that it was a beautiful ceremony.. Many people told us it was the nicest one they had ever seen. We were so pleased with how it turned out, it was exactly what we wanted and we were happy that it came across like it did and wasn’t boring or anything to our guests.

Westbury Manor A++++
When we started wedding planning we really were SO clueless. Especially me, I’m from upstate and had been to maybe 5 weddings on LI but hadn’t seen or heard of a lot of the halls out there. We also felt like many of the places we’d been to were fancy looking but had terrible or blah food. Ideally we wanted great food and a hall that wasn’t too overdone but never thought we would be able to afford it. So we started with the theory that we would have a very inexpensive wedding in a Knights of Columbus or BBQ or something. We started to price those options out and decided to compare that to some halls. I somehow discovered LIW and looked for halls that were reasonably priced. A lot of them were still way to much for us or too far away, etc. I kept seeing people mention the Westbury Manor and noticed all the reviews I saw were great. We went to only a few halls and this was the 3rd (and last!). We met with Mel and he showed us around and talked about the menu and other services. We felt so comfortable there and the staff we came in contact with (over the phone & there) were so professional and helpful compared to some of the other places we called or visited. We both LOVED the grounds, (and the peacocks!) and felt the atmosphere and look was so cozy and elegant without being over the top. So we both had fallen in love with it but were so worried we wouldn’t be able to afford it. I was all set to compromise on price, having a “maximum” of how high I was willing to go in my head. Well, Mel ended up offering us a truly incredible price and we booked it right then and there. We had the wedding of our dreams, that we never would have thought we could afford, and for that I will always love them!

Raoul, or maitre’d and Inez, my bridal attendant were both incredible. Inez was literally right there when I stepped out of the limo (see below!). She was there whenever I needed her but totally not in my way at all. I kept thanking her and she was like “don’t be silly, that’s what I’m here for!”. She made sure we had whatever we wanted…drinks, food, water, etc. We took pictures beforehand and she was there, holding my bouquet and train without me having to ask. We got there a few hours early and they had delicious food and drinks for us and our families the entire time.

Ceremony: A+
We had been hoping to have our ceremony and CH outside, but it wasn’t meant to be, it was cool and rainy for our wedding. The decorations for the ceremony were beautiful. The house florist for the WM is amazing!! Also, Raoul did a great job of making sure that none of our guests saw me before the ceremony, which I was really concerned about.

CH: A
We walked into the room and I felt like I was walking into such a classy, elegant party. We had the library plus the other room and I loved seeing our guests lounging on the couches and chairs. We had the love birds ice sculpture, which turned out nice. We missed probably the first half while we signed the wedding certificate and toasted with champagne in the bridal suite. My bridal attendant, Inez, brought us a bunch of food and it was all delicious.

Reception: A+
This was another flawless thing about our wedding. The WM did such an incredible job. So many guests complimented us on our reception, saying that everything went so well. The food was delicious and our guests were well taken care of. As dinner was being served we enjoyed watching everything for a few minutes and we both commented that everything was done so smoothly, as opposed to the chaos we’ve seen at some weddings. ETA we recently talked to some guests and learned that one of them dropped their napkin on the floor and their napkin was replaced IMMEDIATELY. They were all laughing about it b/c it was SCARY how quickly it was replaced, like someone had been waiting around waiting for it to happen. DH and I had been looking forward to sampling all the entrees, which we did and they were all SO GOOD! My favorites were the stuffed shrimp, the salmon and the beef but everything was very good. We had the heart of sorrento dessert (white chocolate shell with ice cream) and a lot of our guests raved about it. For our cake we chose the cannoli and chocolate pudding filling and it was also really good.
I had received a free chocolate fountain b/c I participated in a panel discussion in the fall and it was great!! Actually, one of my few regrets from my wedding is that after we had our pictures taken by the fountain when it was first out, I filled my plate up with a bunch of stuff, put it down and never ate it! But we did feed each other a few things for the pictures.

We made sure to greet everyone we could at the CH and then made the rounds of the tables at the beginning of the reception. We were able to spend most of the night enjoying the food, dancing and partying with our guests.
We had an amazing time and I hope that someday I can be a wedding guest at the Westbury Manor and enjoy it all over again.
