Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. My X-husband's girlfriends son has autisim. There are great support groups for that with a lot of information. I know she had her son in the StonyBrook program for awhile and that seemed to help him a lot. He also had a few other problems as well though.
for you

I am an occupational therapist and I currently have a few autistic children on my caseload. One of my children on the spectrum is doing fantastic they year in school!! There is so much out there that we can do for autistic children. Do you know where is he on the spectrum? More toward the severe end or toward the higher functioning end??

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
I worked with autistic children throughout college. # of them are currently enrolled in regular public schools. You wouldnt know anything was different about them. Some reading disabilities but thats it. The research going on right now is TREMENDOUS. Please dont think you hit a dead end. WHile I am sorry this happened to you, I would get 2nd, 3rd and 4th opinions as well as solutions for care.
I pray for your family Nancy

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
They have made such big strides with autism that there is no need to worry. I would ask your doctor when is the earliest they can detect autism and have your baby tested. I would not worry about the baby though. You can cross that bridge when you come to it if need be.

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
I am a special ed. teacher and autism consultant. I now live in NC, but I worked on LI for 4 years and have a lot of wonderful contacts in the area of ABA. If you have any questions or need to figure out who to talk to next, FM me and I would be glad to help. You are in a GREAT area to get services for your son. (NC is strides behind NY!). The first thing you need to do is learn your rights and what services your son is entitled to and go get them! You will be his biggest advocate now and he will be an amazing inspiration to you and everyone who he comes in contact with I am praying for you and your family.

They say he is very high functioning, so much that his special ed. teacher who comes to the house every week was extremely shocked he was diagnosed. I'm not sure where on the scale he is; I called the Dr. who did the test this afternoon to try and find out but she wasn't in. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
Thank you all for all your help and advice. I just wanted to let you all know that I did have Luke tested under the Early Intervention program shortly after he turned 2. This was right around the time he was also diagnosed with Epilepsy. He has been receiving speech and special ed. services for about a month now, and already I have seen improvement. What I didn't realize is that the symptoms of Epilepsy and Autism are so similiar. He is currently seeing teachers from Just Kids Early Learning Center and they are fantastic! I know they have an Autism program, but it has a waiting list, so we are going to look into it. I think I was more shocked and sad when I wrote the original post. I feel tons better now after reading all your posts and looking at the resources you've all sent. Thank you again so very, very much!

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
Make sure you take him to a specialist and get him into therapy early. THey can do wonders when the start asap.
I've slways heard though that autism isn't supposed to be diagnosed until age 6.

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
I can certainly understand how you may feel. I too teach children with autism and it is common for a parent to go through a period of mourning (for lack of a better term) when their child is given a diagnosis. Once you are ready, you will need to be a proactive and strong advocate for your child, Make sure you get every evaluation possible and know that your home school district is under obligation to provide any additional service he may need (ie speech or OT) Don't give up hope. Children and adults with autism lead extremely productive lives. Two of my students are transitioning to a high school with diploma bound program for kids with varying disabilities. I hope this helps.

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
I am sorry that you have to deal with something like this, but with all the new things that they can do for autism just keep your head up high and everything will be ok. One of my friends daughter is autistic and with the right meds she is fine.

I completed my internship at Just Kids in Middle Island. It is a great school and it sounds to me that he is going to be okay! Good luck and FM me if you want to talk.

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
MOst men are in denial b/c they cannot deal with there children being labeled. My boss's son is 5 and has PDD ( a form of autism) and he is extremely bright. It depends on how severe it is and what it effects. They sometomes have "stims" that they do more often like repeating words or rocking but if you allow these behaviors just for a few moments then ask him to stop and reinforce that he stop that will work down the road. My sister in law works with autistic children and my other sister in law has an autistic nephew 4y/o. His brother is 2 and hasn't shown any signs as of yet. Feel free to FM me. I will also recommend thatyou educate yourself as much as you can.

Re: NWR: But I need some support right now...
Im so sorry to read this, but please realize that this isn't the worst news you could have received. FH's son is 6 and has autism. He was 3 when I first started dating FH and he has made tremendous improvements. He is in mainstream schools and socially doing wonderful. Good Luck and keep your chin up.
