GREAT TIP for blocking hotel rooms!
I read this in a budget wedding book and it actually worked.
If you are looking to get some competitive quotes from hotels around your RH, contact the Long Island Visitors bureau. www.discoverlongisland.com
Tell them you are planning a wedding and looking for __ # of rooms in a certain area. They will send back a more detailed list of info they need from you.
What they then do is send out a fax to hotels in the area you are looking for and get the hotels to almost bid on quotes for you. I received about 4 emails and 2 faxes from hotels. I really wanted a particular hotel to begin with and kind of used the rates I got from other hotels as leverage to get them to reduce the rate a bit.
Worked like a charm! And takes away the hassle of calling a bunch of hotels at once!

I just wanted to bump this great tip for blocking rooms. I'm not sure if it helped me get a better price, but it meant that I only had to call one person. Within 2 days I had gotten emails from 4 different hotels with their pricing. I'm just waiting for my contract from the Hilton to come in the mail and then I can officially check this off my list!!

FYI-Have your guests check the hotels website for rates also. I got a decent rate at the Hilton, but if you book directly on their internet site it's still cheaper.

I am using www.hotelplanner.com and they are also very good! Hotels actually BID for you here!  And you get rebates too when you use this site!
