Videographers - is this true?

I spoke with a DJ last night and he told me that he doesn't provide lighting. He then proceeded to tell me that most wedding couples and videographers prefer not to have lighting as it ruins the final wedding video.

Is this guy full of it or is there any truth in what he was saying?

Hopefully you're having a daytime reception in a room with tons of windows. If you're having a night reception then it depends on how the place is lit. Most videographers have carry an on-camera light. This doesn't mean the light is always on, just when it's absolutely necessary.

It is a night reception. I know that the videographers have their own lighting, but this DJ was saying that videographers don't like the DJ's lighting (i.e., colorful moving lights) as it doesn't look nice in the final wedding video. I have never heard that before. Your thoughts?

Most DJ's have never asked me what my lighting requirements are. But then again, very few wedding dance floors have the spinning lights now that I think about it.

Your DJ is right, though, that it will affect the finished video of that particular section. As a bright light flashes through the lens of a videocamera, depending on how the camera is set, it will cause the camera to compensate, going from filming in dark to ultra light. This back and forth adjusting may cause the video to look out of focus, unless the videographer used her own light source, which is what I would do in this situation.
