Question about invitations, vendors and prices....

The price of invitations, depending on the brand, can be costly. This may seem like a stupid questions, but how do the invitations stores come up with their prices? Many say they discount their invitations but than how do they make money off of them?

I have just been seeing more and more wide range of prices for invitations on this site. I am wondering if anyone else knows or has been wondering how stores come up with their prices....my invitations were fairly expensive, but supposably I got a discount off of the dealers price. Now I am looking into buying favors from the same store and they said they offer a discount on them as well. So are they upping the prices and than discounting them, or am I really getting them for good prices?

Has anyone else thought about this....or do I just have to much time on my hands?

I guess they feel that they will still make a profit on them and they'll get more people to order if they are marked down.

I've heard places discount 30% and 40% on some of the popular invitation books. I guess they are marked up more than 40% more of their cost.

I saved about 350 by going to another invitation place than the first place I went to- I think she discounted 40%.

Re: Question about invitations, vendors and prices....

invitations are marked up immensely. vendors could offer 50% off and STILL make money! (although not too much). and not all places offer the full discount--party city says 30% off--but that's JUST the invite. the rest is 20 or 25% off. find a vendor with the best price that you trust. i found a few online that were 40% off--but i wanted to deal with a real person so i ordered through gownfind. 30% off everything.

Re: Question about invitations, vendors and prices....

I asked the woman that we bought our invitations from because the first place I looked was at the Watermill because it was just easier. I found an invitiation that I loved and asked how much they would be. At the time I was told like 1600 for 150 of them. I was like that is ridiculous. Someone recommended me to Proper Paper in Plainview on Old Country Road (they were great). I found the same invitiation there. The woman there was so helpful. i happened to notice that the inviations were a different price in the book a whole $100 cheaper in proper papers books then they were in the watermill. Turns out that there are 2 different pricing charts that places can use. For these particular invitations there was a 40% mark up & a 50% markup. The watermill used the 50% and proper paper used 40%. The both gave 20% off so it worked out that our invitations were about $600 cheaper at proper paper because of th elower markup. They were still expensive but I couldn't find anything else I loved & at that point our budget was pretty much out the window anyway. Good luck--check them out they were very helpful.

I was wondering the same thing... my invitations are supposedly discounted 30%, but they are still ridiculously expensive. I dont even think they were that worth it, but i was desparate at that point and just gave in. I feel your pain.
