hall deposit question
I know to hold your date you need to give a deposit. So lets say you book your hall now and your wedding is next July... when do you start paying the rest of the bill for the hall? Do you have a few months? What portions are refundable? I know the deposit isn't refundable.
FH may get relocated within the next year and not anywhere near here so we may be moving so we just want to know in case the actual event gets moved elsewhere....

First off, Hi Cheryl!!
Now, to answer some questions, it's going to depend on the hall. In my case, with Jericho Terrace, after the deposit was made, we had to have 1/2 of the balance paid by 1 year before the wedding. Example...say balance is $10,000 and wedding is October 1, 2007. Must have $5,000 paid by October 1, 2006.
Regarding what portions are refundable, again, depends on the hall. From my experience, most will not return the deposit if the wedding is cancelled a certain time before the wedding and not rebooked, and some won't return the deposit period.
Best bet, speak with the hall(s) you're interested in and tell them your situation. Get everything you want/need to know BEFORE you sign a contract.
Good Luck!!! -Jill

Re: hall deposit question
Hello!
It does depend on the hall. Many halls will expect a certain percentage up front and may give you a payment schedule of 3 small payments (1 like every few months) and then a large payment a week or so before. It depends on how much ime between you book your date and the day of the wedding too. With our hall they broke it down w/ 1 more small payment because we booked so far in advance so the larger payment 2 weeks before the wedding wasn't so painful. In suffolk county if you give your hall at least 6 months notice they will give you all of your deposit but $100 back. Nassau does not have the same law, so inquire w/ the hall what their policy is. Most do not refund deposits though. Hope this helps!
ETA: Some halls may not give you anything back unless they are able to re-book your date (Non-suffolk hall)

Re: hall deposit question
In my case, we had to give $1000 deposit, then 6 months before half of the balance was due, and 30 days before the remaining balance was due.

Re: hall deposit question
I just went through this with my first hall, that I had given $5000 to. I sent them a certified letter stating the Suffolk County law about refund before 6 months. I received my refund back in 2 weeks.

Re: hall deposit question
Each hall will be different, and there is a certain amount you will likely lose if you cancel. We booked slightly over a year in advance, owed $1000 for a deposit and then every so often we got a bill for additional amounts based on our estimated guest count at that time...the rest is due the day of I believe to cover actual guest count. I know that if we cancel we definitely lose the $1000, I'm not sure how much we lose after that or if it's based on how close you cancel...speak to your hall and ask them.

Re: hall deposit question
Yes, every hall is different. We only paid the deposit (non-refundable).
This is one of the reason why we are not paying until it's due. I know some brides like to make regular payments not to be overwhelmed by the total due to all their vendors.
We opted not to do that for the simple reason that yes, things can happen (job transfer, emergency, etc...) and we don't want to give money that will be lost in such case before we actually need to give it.
The money is being put aside into a saving account that we don't touch. Plus it gives us interests.
My hall only asked us to pay the balance 3 weeks prior to wedding day.

Re: hall deposit question
We put $500 down and they set up a schedule for us.. so we paid the first lump payment, decided that we didn't like it and are now paying month to month an amount that will equal the lump payments, maybe a little more.. They actually suggested this to us.. HTH

Re: hall deposit question
It depends on the hall...Westbury Manor for example requires payments every 3 months until your wedding where the week before the wedding the remainder of the payment is due in full...which is so much better bc it gives you time and allows you a little flexibility in your budgeting.

Re: hall deposit question
Thank you for the info... it is a Nassau based hall... but b/c of that I will see if I can negotiate to pay the bulk within a shorter amount of time before the wedding.
Thanks for the info...

Re: hall deposit question
I booked my hall Oct 2004, and I went yesterday to pay 50% of the remaining bill. Then the final payment is due with your final head count, two weeks before the wedding.

Re: hall deposit question
Hello,
At Swan Club i had to put a 1,000 deposit to hold the date, and in 3 months 50% of the bill was due. The remainding balance isn't due until 4 days before the wedding. But I was also told that as long as we keep the account active...that it was ok to make smaller payments.

Re: hall deposit question
I had to pay $1000 for deposit, and then had two more payments of $2500 scheduled every 3 months, so that by July I will have paid $6000, not sure when the remaining is due, I think with final headcount like 10 days before.

Re: hall deposit question
I had to give my CH $500 to hold the date and then they gave me a schedule of payments that needed to be made. From there, I do not have to make another payment until the final balance which is due 1 month before our wedding.
Each catering hall is different, so I would find out from each place you look at what payment plans they have.
