Catholic Brides question
Are you able to say your own vows at the church? Are you having full mass?

Re: Catholic Brides question
From what I understand your vows are the Catholic Church standard vows. You cannot write your own. But, you might want to double check with your priest on this one, perhaps there are slight variations??? I know for a fact however, you cannot aid things like "I promise to always make your favorite dinner and walk the dog" type of things... LOL They also will guide you on the readings and the psalm....
Also, I am having the full Mass.... wouldn't have it any other way. A good friend is playing the organ, another is cantoring, FH's friend is a priest and is marrying us, my friend's son is our altar boy and friends of mine will be the eucharistic ministers. In fact, it really is the Mass that I am most looking forward to on my wedding day.

Re: Catholic Brides question
No mass for us, just ceremony. As far as vows are concerned, we're doing the traditional vows, and then Darren will be saying his own vows to my son Lucas, as well as an exchange of rings. Our church allows this! I know it's going to be beautiful

I am Catholic so I have many friends who have been married in church. A full mass takes about 45 mins to 1 hr. No mass is like 20-30mins. I think both bride and groom have to be catholic for a full mass (??). Some said their own vows or stayed with the traditional vows. My sister went to pre-cana and she got a book with different variations on the traditional vows, but her DH wanted to write his own. I have had friends who were not allowed to change anything at all, so it depends on the church you attend. My pastor is pretty flexible.
Hope that helps O

Re: Catholic Brides question
I think I would be too nervous to try and say my own vows, and FH agrees with me, So we're going to stick with traditional vows. We're also going to have a full mass.

Re: Catholic Brides question
You can write your own vows... I just had my last night of pre cana last night and we went over that... unless it differs from church to church. We're using the standard vows.. i'll be way too nervous to deal with that haha... We're not having a full mass... just the wedding ceremony.

Re: Catholic Brides question
The vows don't vary much from the traditional vows...I think they took out obey but basically you have to say their vows...Sometimes if you have a good relationship with your priest they will let you say your own. AS far as a full mass I'm not having one being that FH is not Catholic but the only aspect missing form a full mass and the cermony is the communion.... Everything else is done its like 45 minutes.
Both me and FH felt that people are there to see us get married not really to attend a church service so we wanted it this way anyway.

If you want a mass on Sunday, talk to your pastor. It can be done with a special dispensation if he is willing to get one. My sister had a mass on a Sunday.

Re: Catholic Brides question
Looks like we are getting mixed reviews on whether you can or can't do your own vows in the church. I'm wondering if it goes on a church by church or priest by priest standard?

Re: Catholic Brides question
If you go to the Diocese of Rockville Centre (drvc.org), it will give you all the information needed if you are getting married in a catholic church on long island. Stated in the diocese home page states that you must use their own vows, but that you may use your own vows after using theirs.

From what I understand your vows are the Catholic Church standard vows. You cannot write your own.
It depends on the Church and also on the Priest. In Pre-Cana that actually give you a book that has different vows to choose from that vary from standard vows.
