Getting JUST negatives and proofs from photographer?
We were thinking of getting a photographer for our wedding and just asking for the negatives and proofs. Are there any that do that?
If you girls have experience with this, was it worth it? Or more of a pain in the butt?
Im assuming this route is cheaper. Let me know if you know photographers that provide this service.

We are getting the negatives and proofs from our photographer. We're using Marianela Vera (www.nellavera.com) - all her information is on her website.

You get all the digital files... and you can get a dvd OR printed proofs... its really awsome, and resonably priced...

we did that and used Dan Wagner. he has a package for only the proofs & the digital files on DVDs.
we later added a digital album b/c we love our pictures so much!!

If they use film, they HAVE TO give you the negagives by law. You can just hire them and pay for the proofs.
I am having digital photos and I want all the proofs on cd (high resolution). No albums. I will do it myself on Shutterfly. I am not able to pay $$$$ for photos but still want them on a cd for later.

When you get the negatives you have to go back to a photography place if you want other pics
we are getting ours on a cd & proofs

We have only contracted for negatives and proofs. We have the option of having an album put together after the wedding. Check out Angelica Glass
She has been one of my favorite vendors to work with!

You should make sure that you are getting the negatives and files AND the right to print them. If your photgrapher copyrights everything, he can encrypt it so that you have it, but cannot print..

there are many photogaphers that offer diy packages. i know mine does, www.timexposures.com. i am not aware of any law that requires photographers to give you your negatives for free, even film. many make you pay for them or have you wait a certain time length before they give them to you. for ours, we have our digital file in our contract and the pics are not copyrighted and are print ready quality. we are paying $300 for that on top of our package. i highly recommend timexposures! ~lacey

Actually they indeed have to give you the negatives when they shoot on film. The photograher of one of my coworker "offered" the information. There is even a website to complain if any photographer does not do it.

They absolutely can copyright YOUR pictures and control and use of them, whether they give you the negatives or not. I don't know of any law that they have to give you the negatives but I have had a few friends who got burned and now can only get reprints from their photogs. If you can get me that website, I will spread the word!

It's all a matter of how each photographer does business I think...some do not offer up the negatives ever and some offer them as part of the deal...sometimes I think you can even get the prints credited to your "package" if you opt to not get them....but you should ask this stuff right out of the gate, and then get it in writing before any money exchanges hands! Make sure it's clear that you get the negatives and that you are able to make prints yourself and you should be fine.
