NWR: QOTD - When you see something, do you say something?

So I'm getting my tea w/lemon this morning at a deli on Madison Avenue between 48th Street & 49th Street, and there's this huge black handbag sitting on the sidewalk w/no apparent owner. It wasn't there when I walked into the store, and it was there five minutes later when I walked out of the store.

I was in such awe of the amount of people just casually walking by it. I immediately notified security in my building (on the corner) and in turn called 911 to report it.

Some woman on the elevator just sneered at me and said "What are you worried about? It's a handbag, probably belongs to some bum." I responded with "It's all well and good if it belongs to a bum and nothing's in it. However, if God forbid it turns out to be something else, I don't want my effing (yes, I cursed in Corporate America) head blown off, these are the times we live in a.hole (yes, another curse.)" As I got off the elevator, two people thanked me.

So that's my story, just curious to know - if and when you see something (suspicious) - do you say something?

You know something similar happened to me at the outlets in Riverhead...it wasn't a bag but someone was video taping the entrances and exits ..not in a touristy way....and it gave me a weird ominous feeling.....I wanted to say something to the security guard there but I didnn't...after telling the story to my FI...he was a little mad that I didn't say something..next time I will

In today's world you need to be more observant & if you see something that just "doesn't look right" you need to speak up! You never know & even if it is "nothing" then at least it is peace of mind!

I would have done the same thing as you!!!!

I think you did the right thing Christine! I would have said something too and that woman had no business giving her two cents!

This happened to me once on the subway & I kick myself in th azz for not saying something but there was a black backpack under the corner seats & a number of people got up & it just stayed there....most likely a kid just forgot to take it off the train, but you never know....

If I see something, I DEFINITELY say something.

I think you made the right decision. Although we all want to believe we're safe and sound, the world around us isn't stable. Thank you for sticking up and saying something - we each can make the world a little safer in our own little ways!

Yes, I absolutely would, kudos to you Chris for taking a stand on that, that woman should be ashamed of herself. In this day and age, we need to be more observant and protective.

I most definately WOULD report it. Unfortunately in this day & age that we live in.. anything is possible. Better safe than sorry.

Yes...In a Post Office no less! FH and I were on a long line at the P.O. and we noticed a package sitting on a side counter unattended. We kept watching it to see if anyone was coming back to pick it up. By the time we got up to the counter, we immediately told the postal worker, who thankfully told his manager. But I couldn't wait to get out of there in case there was something in that package!

And I'm glad you said something!! Every little bit helps. It's OUR responsibility, not someone else's!

I always wonder what is in those huge trash bags that bums carry onto the subway....I mean, is that just a bag of their possesions or could the bag contain something dangerous? It's just so hard to know how to react in certain situations.

i think you did the right thing. and i am glad you told that lady off.

i am a big believer that you need to do something - because if you wait for someone else too - it will never get done.

what was the story in the 70's about the girl in brooklyn - she was like 19 yrs old - and was being stabbed to death in the courtyard of her apt building - every single person in the building heard her begging and screaming for help - but no one called 911 - they all assumed someone else would do it. so the girl was killed infront of her own building with so many people hearing her die and they did nothing.

you were absolutly right!!! I don't have a story (thankfully) but I think if I was in the smaeposition I would have don the SAME EXACT THING (including the cursing!!!!)

Christine you ABSOLUTELY did the right thing. Its the dumb @ss ignorance of people that terrorists hope for and itll be THAT reason why when/if we are attacked again.

Omg that BK story is horrible, I never heard about that!! You certainly did the right thing Christine, it's sad to say but you can never be too safe in this world. Better to be overly-cautious than to wind up in a situation that could've been avoided.

I saw something similar at Newark airport last year. There was a small weekend rolling suitcase, just sitting by the elevator one of the parking garages. And not a soul in sight. I immediately called security.
