NWR: meeting with HR at work tomorrow....
I've posted several times about my job. I've been on a few interviews but nothing has really panned out.
I've been here exactly 2 years with no raise, no promotion, nothing.
HR just called me and asked to meet with me tomorrow for a "catch-up" to see how I'm feeling, etc. I'm meeting with the Junior person that I usually meet with.
I'm not really sure what this meeting is for.....I HIGHLY doubt it's about a raise.....I know the politics here, and I feel like they want to ask me to take on more responsbilities, etc....
Is it fair to agree to take on more responsiblity only if I get a raise?? I mean...they've asked me to help out with several projects in the past few months and I did so willingly. At what point do I say no....unless I get compensation for it? I don't want to be seen as difficult, but 2 years here without a raise or promotion has made me very cynical.
Suggestions / Insight??
TIA!

Re: NWR: meeting with HR at work tomorrow....
You knew I was going to respond.....I had many, too many experiences similar at that place. The reality is they are a business and they really try to get as much for their money as possible. So yes, they may ask you to take on more. For me, I took on more for the experience, and after a while of no raise, I got tired of it. I was also there during a different time in our economy. I would def. tell her that you are frustrated with your salary.
The industry you are in is a very hard one. As well known as they are, they don't always take care of their employees. I will tell you, when I was fed up and started interviewing, I was being offered 20K more than I was making there. Goes to show how behind my salary was. I think it is a fantastic place to learn, but after 2 years I would start to look elsewhere.
Hope this helps... -steph

Re: NWR: meeting with HR at work tomorrow....
Thanks so much for your response, Steph.
Yes, it is very frustrating to work here.....2 years with no raise *****! But, I am in a very bad place to start looking.....I just can't start a new job right now....my boss right now is very flexible with me going to florist appts, tastings, etc....and I just don't want to chance starting a new job and working for a strict boss right before the wedding.
That being said....I suppose I should just agree to "challenge" myself and take on more work here....that's what they want to hear afterall...and I don't have plans to leave anytime soon.
Yes, I could be making 20k more as well...I am so underpaid for my experience. It just *****, cause I like the atmosphere here....why why why won't they take care of their employees? I don't get why you wouldn't want to keep the good people instead of rehiring over and over again. So much turnover here

If memory serves me right, aren't you in advertising? If so what dept. do you work in?
I'm currently at my 4th agencies and what I notice is that they don't give you anything without asking for it. They always want to give you "more responsibilities" but don't offer pay.
Don't take on the role w/o pay, if they won't pay you another agency will.
Good luck!

Yes, I work in advertising as an assistant to one of the Account Management groups. I've gotten nothing but rave reviews and have assisted some top level executives since I've been here. But, it seems pretty clear to me that they know they could fill my role easily (a lot of eager people ready to have my job for less pay), and that is the reason that I haven't gotten any raises.

Let's look at this... your wedding is in three months... I'd say listen to what they say, do what they want, after the wedding start to look for something that really charges you up... it's not good to beat yourself down day after day.. believe me.. I'm not in a great situation in work now either but I need to keep my priorities in order.. that is , unless your marrying someone filthy rich!!!!

yeah...that is pretty much how i feel. I guess I will just let them know that the salary situation frustrates me, but that I'm still willing to take on more responsibility......just keep them happy for a few more months.

Sweetie...I truly feel every word you are saying...almost two years out of that place and I just had a flashback of emotion...I used to fantasize about leaving that place and kept thinking..wait till I leave, then they will miss me..and you know what???they were fine w/out me. What does help is if you have a strong boss. Someone that is respected by the lords above..not sure who you are with these days..is DO still there? Maybe you can talk to them and have them go to bat for you regarding salary. My problem was my boss was more concerned about her salary and didn't care for mine. I can see why you want to stay because of the wedding...I stayed my last year because I was in grad school and I didn't want any additional stress. Stick it out and do what you have to do after the wedding.

Re: NWR: meeting with HR at work tomorrow....
oh....and one thing i did do was when they asked me to take on more...i asked them if there was anyway i could take things off..
ex... we made a list of my current repsonsibilites and the new..then my supervisor and i combed through what can be given to others... I was in your position when i started in another group like yours (fm me for more details) and there was more of a staff for me to distribute my work to....not sure if this is an option for you.

Thanks. Yes, DO is still here but I have never worked with him. Last year I took my concerns to a very high level Exec (RS) and he called HR on my behalf. The top dog in HR called me and said, "RS has called us and we just wanted to let you know that we've heard nothing but great things about you. We are keeping you in mind for higher positions, but in terms of salary you will have to wait until May and October, which is when we give raises" (October came and went with nothing).
Anyway.....I'm going to stick it out....it is hard explaining this to FH - he works on Wall Street where he gets quarterly bonuses that are as much as my yearly salary....he constantly gets recognized for his hard work, so he doesn't understand why I would stay at a place that doesn't value me.
