NWR- Puppy Problem

I posted on Pets, but this gets more action....

Boogie, my puppy appears to have a blood shot eye..we noticed it last night, but he seemed fine so we didnt worry about it... TOday it seems to be a bit cloudier with blood.

Anyone ever have this happen?

We called the vet, they werent there... BUT hopefully someone has an idea of the problem and something I can do. He does not seem to be in pain though

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

I wouldn't worry too much. My dog is old now but has had that problem on and off his entire life. I am not exactly too sure what it is. I think he will be fine until you can get to the vet. Good luck.

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

I would definately take him but I wouldn't take him to an emergency vet. When the vet can casually make an appointment bring him in. It doesn't hurt in case it is something more serious. My dog has always had chronic conjunctivitis (pink eye.)

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

really?

Could it make him blind? I am nervous, I was reading about some eye problems puppies can get which can lead to blindness

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

I think it would have to be pretty serious for him to go blind. Just make sure you bring him tomorrow. He will be okay. It is an infection , just like we get..at least he is not annoyed by it.

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

I would call the vet in the morning... Those emergency places charge ALOT of money, so unless its a life threatening issue, I wouldn't go to one.

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

I'm sure she'll be okay. My doggie has that problem sometimes too...could be an allergy or something. At one point we took her to the vet & they gave us this thick cream to put in her eye. I'm sure your doggie w/b fine....call tomorrow.

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

I'm convinced my dog has allergies. I give him eye drops sometimes or I was once told to soak a cotton ball in warm water and then drip the water into his eyes to rinse it. But I would call the vet...it's probably nothing serious.

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

I really wouldn't be too worried, I had a German Sheppard growing up and two Labrador Retrievers on my own. Between the three dogs all I have to say is that it's like having a kid, everyone is different, it may be allergies, it may be an infection. I wouldn't worry about it being too serious. My black lab had that and her eye seemed really glassy and I waited three days to take her to the vet, because sometimes they can scratch there eye, etc. (there are many reasons why it may not look right) Anyway, when it got progressively pinker I took her to the vet and they prescribed eye drops within three days her eyes cleared up (even though you give the medicine for longer) and that was it, no more problems, now she is two and in the meantime she seems to have chronic ear infections (probably due to allergies) and well, you just have to deal with it, everyone is different as are animals

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

Don't worry about it. My FH has a lab that is young and he gets it all the time. It's allergies, but I would take him to the vet to check it out. good luck

I have a shih tzu as well. This is very common. I would see if you can call around and get a quick vet appt. tomorrow morning anywhere, even if it isn't your normal vet. This isn't very serious, but still, they will give you this clear gel to put in his eyes. Check around your dogs eyes, is fur getting in his eyes? That could be a big problem and make sure you clean the eye boogies out of their eyes daily.

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

If it were pink eye I dont think his eye would look cloudy or blood shot. It sounds like it could be something a little more serious. I would call around and see if you can get a vet appt. by tomorrow morning at the latest. You dont want to take any chances with his eyes!

Re: NWR- Puppy Problem

My puppy Sarge has allergies, and sometimes his eyes get VERY blood shot. As a matter of fact, i noticed today they were very irritated. I wouldn't worry too much. But check with your regular vet when you can.
