Rehearsal Dinner Question

Is it necessary to have an Open Bar at the rehearsal dinner? Most of the places I am looking at will add about 20.00 to the dinner meal if there is an open bar.

In your HONEST opinion, how do you feel about it? What are you doing? Do you think it is "wrong" to not have it.

All opinions welcome

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

I had one-

do you expect people to buy there own drink?
or would you pay the bar bill?

b/c $20 per person isn't that bad if you have big drinkers

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

no. we are not doing that or beer and wine. beer and wine was $12pp. If someone wants a drink, they can go to the bar and pay for it. They will have an open bar all day at the wedding the following day.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

No I wouldnt want them to buy their own drink, I guess I was thinking the beer and wine route or pay the bill. Fh's parents are paying and we are having about 40 people... so I was trying to keep the cost down since they're helping so much with the wedding...

more ideas PLEASE

ETA- I think people will drink, but we do not have BIG drinkers....I dont want people to get wasted that night either!

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

I don't think it necessary... just have them order drinks at the table and make sure you have pitchers of soda and carafs of wine on the table. In my experience most ppl do not get loaded at the RD and they know that the Bride and groom are paying for it and will be considerate about the price.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

I don't think it is necessary at all. I think beer, wine, & soda are fine.

find out how much beer and wine would be-
then you can run a tab for the other drinks

but IMO- it's a celebration- and a thank you to everyone invloved with the wedding- I think you need to take care of your guests

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

We didn't have an open bar; my MIL decided to just run a tab and pay it at the end of the night. It made sense - while at first people went straight to the bar, our guests didn't really drink a lot after the first hour.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

We had an open bar, top shelf liquor for 4 hours and IMO it was a bit of a waste of money. Most of our guests didn't stay the full 4 hours.

We had our RD the night before our wedding, so that may have had some impact on it, with people wanting to have an early night. I think beer, wine and soda would be a good option if you want to save $.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

we are having them add any alcoholic drinks ordered to the bill. We really don't have too many drinkers and to pay $15 more a person, when maybe 2 or 3 people will drink isn't worth it.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

We had wine on the tables and paid if someone ordered a drink-- which was not many. I think most people realized other drinks were'nt included and didn't go nuts with it.

We just had wine at our rehersal dinner (I think) and everyone was fine with that. It may have been beer too though!

exactly~~
Just to add beer and wine is expensive IMO. OUr dinner is also at 5pm, we should be done by 8. Its too bad we can't just buy some bottles of wine, it would be a lot cheaper.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

I definitely think beer and wine is fine. I think we had beer and wine on the tables and then we paid the tab for those people that ordered drinks. But most people just stuck to the beer or wine, so the bill was not that high.

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

Why don't you have the FIL's pay for the RD and you and your FI pay the bar tab. I'm not a big drinker either but I don't think your bridal party should have to pay for their own drinks. JMO

Re: Rehearsal Dinner Question

This is a tough question. IMHO I don't think that people should have to pay for alcohol when you invite them to a dinner party.

We are having only beer and wine because we FH and I are picking up the cost of the RD and we simply cannot afford to have an open bar.

I am hoping that people will be not be offended if they are at least offered beer and wine which is why we are going this way.

that's nice and well if you're rich but $20 a person with 40 people is $800 plus tax and tip!!! they don't need to get trashed because it's a celebration. i think it's unneccessary especially since the dinner will cost $50.

get what you can. it's not neccessary to do open bar--beer, wine and soda is more than enough
