NWR - teachers
Ladies,
When did you begin applying for elementary teaching jobs on Long Island? I am afraid it's too early to send out resumes now for September, but want to get them out ASAP so schools know I am interested...
For those who got jobs, did anyone get a job right away, or did you all have to substitute first?
I'm so scared I won't get something...

Re: NWR - teachers
Look through the NY Times on Sundays, and Newsday .....many districts are now only accepting on-line applications. I would start now and then resend them towards the end of the school year. Good luck!

Re: NWR - teachers
Start by answering all ads in The Times and Newsday. Call everybody you know who is an elementary school teacher and ask them if they would mind putting your resume in and if they think they are going to have any openings in their school districts. Put your feelers out at the school districts you student taught at and express your interest to them. Some school districts begin their hiring in February where others wait until the last week in August. Much of luck to you!

I suggest you go onto the Nassau BOCES website to get contact info and addresses for schools on Long Island (if that's where you want to teach) and send your resume EVERYWHERE!!!! Do NOT be picky! I mean EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK!!

Re: NWR - teachers
I must admit, it is extremely difficult getting a teaching job on LI - I graduated with a special ed degree, concentration in autism, and was an autism consultant with 10 years experience in autism - applied for autism classrooms, and never heard from districts!!! I was like what are they doing, wiping their butts with my resume????
ETA: I never got hired from a district - well, Cold Spring Harbor called me after I accepted my position - as an autism consultant for schools through NS-LIJ - but it was tough searching!!!

Re: NWR - teachers
In many districts people have to give notice by the end of January/beginning of February that they are retiring. The districts know of those openings early on. They also have an idea of which teachers they do not want to hire back by March. That is when they start to do their interviewing. Sending out your resumes by end of February is a good decision. I don't know if it will hurt to send them earlier or if they will just put those early resumes to the side.

Re: NWR - teachers
APPLY NOW!!!!!!! go to newyorktimes.com. All the good districxts post there. my district posted ONE ad in the beginning of march and i was hired by April. Most districts are done with hiring by April. Go to newyorktimes.com, olasjobs.org (BOCES on-line website) msoit districts want it emailed or uploaded to their own application system on line. Most districts stop advertising by March. the summer openings are last minute retirees, people taking leave, etc... basically unexpected openings so there arent' many. let me know if i can help... i was lucky and got into a good district and had several interviews with other districts... i am a pro job searcher. FM if you need to.
