If you were going to book a flight out of the country (not HM) how far in advance would you book?
Would 2 months be too little?
FH (then DH) may go to Munich August 2006 for a conference and I'd love to go with him, but flights are $$$$$ and it's right after the wedding. But I have dividend miles that I could use if I get up to the next award. But I'd need to put my flight to Italy (HM) towards my points to get a free flight to europe, and I dont get the points until June when I fly. Probably I couldn't book the new flight until July when I come back. That wouldn't work, would it?

It depends on how quickly the free seats available for frequent flier travellers fill up.
If you are close, you might be able to buy some miles or earn miles through partners, I've transferred Marriott Points to Continental and I earn miles for going to Shop Rite (I live in NJ right now).

Yeah, I need 50,000 miles and I have just over 35,000. I looked and it would cost about $600 to buy the miles. But then again, flights are $1400 from NY and $1900 from MD where we live. So if FH decides that he is going to the conference, I should look into that option.

August is a very busy month for travel in Europe. From what I heard, companies give the entire month off as vacation. I don't know if that would affect American flights to Europe, but I wanted to give you a heads up. Why don't you try calling the airline or a travel agent and see what they say.

Yes it may work. FH booked a trip to Hawaii this past August only 2 months before with airline miles.
You never know!
