Stupid question of the day...what is hand cancelling?

I wrote this already but Ill be happy to tell you again:
"It basically means you use a hand stamp to cancel the stamp instead of the invitation going through an automated machine. They can get stuck and destroyed. After spending money on invitations and calligraphy, I didnt want to risk ruining them. There is no charge for it. "
