There are sooooo many factors that go into this but if this is ultimately what you want to do, yes, I do think it's worth it.

Re: Do you think it is worth it to take out a $40,000 student loan to...

thanks! I am still waiting to hear if I even got accepted into the program but if they do then I am faced with taking out Student Loans or hopefully getting a scholarship or something....my job helps a little bit...they give $3,000 per year towards school but when you have to pay almost 1,000 per credit thats not a lot.

absolutly. Unfortunately, how many of us have that kind of cash lying around. School is an investment in your future, so yes it is worth it! Most people take out loans to pay for school.

It depends on your field, but as a recruiter I know that a graduate degree will open a lot of doors for you and almost always increase your salary.

Re: Do you think it is worth it to take out a $40,000 student loan to...

I think it depends. How long will it take you to make the $40,000 back with a new job featuring your new degree? How much happier will you be and how much more autonomous, challenged and interested will you be in your work after you get the degree?

I took a much smaller loan for grad school and I'm glad I did it. I took my time paying it off so it wouldn't be much of a burden each month.

Yes!

Every job I have had since grad school my masters degree got me to the interview and has allowed me to ask for more money when negotiating salary.

Depends on the type of program. Be careful with loans, I speak from experience. But, if its a program that will lead to a job thatyou love, its worth it

I'd say no. But that is because in my field people pay YOU to go to grad school, not the other way around. But I know a lot of fields aren't like that. $40,000 is a lot though. Do you have a job also?

i was always of this mindset as well. currently i'm electing to hold off because i have the hopes of starting a family and being the primary person in charge of child care. the last couple companies i worked for would have not given the option to pay for school, and now being older i can't justify going into debt if i may not be 100% career driven in the future. i will always have to work, but i don't see the huge ROI in my case.

if i didn't want kids and raise a family, i would take on the debt and bust my *** in a heartbeat.

Re: Do you think it is worth it to take out a $40,000 student loan to...

Can you find a cheaper school? Not sure what you are going for. I went to a school that was really expensive only because I made a quick decision to go there and they had rolling admission. If I had done some research I would have gone to a cheaper school with a better reputation.

BUT if you are going to a school that has a great reputation for what you are majoring in..GO FOR IT!

Re: Do you think it is worth it to take out a $40,000 student loan to...

will you use it and will it benefit your career?
are you trying to buy a house? is there any way to get a job that will help you pay for it as part of the benefits?

so many factors but its a wonderful thing to do if you have the means.

my company helped pay for mine as did schoalrships. i will say the night school was hard on me but in the end very well worth it!

Id say its worth it, however $1,000 per credit is a bit much. Is there a way you can go to a cheaper school and get the same benefits?

It depends...what are you going to grad school for?

I will have a total of about 120,000 in debt by the time I'm done with law school.

Re: Do you think it is worth it to take out a $40,000 student loan to...

I think the answer is almost always yes - but you have to consider how much you want this, what your earning potential will be when you're done, and whether this particular program/school will help you find a job, what kind of job, how much pay, etc. I have about 160K in loans from law school and undergrad (I just graduated in May), but it was worth every penny. I passed up a scholarship to go to the school I went to but it more than paid off in the job search. And, even if you're talking about a masters in lower paying fields, if it's going to make you happy and get you a job you really want, I still think you should do it. You get a long time to pay off the loans and 40K is actually not that bad for school these days. Good luck!!!

I did it.... I considered it an investment in myself. DH will have close to $80K in student loans by the time he's done with law school. Luckily he didn't have any undergrad loans.

Re: Do you think it is worth it to take out a $40,000 student loan to...

You really have to sit down and think about it. Work it out moneywise. I currently have $25,000 in student loans from my undergrad and my expected payment is about $200 a month, so with $40,000 you'd have to expect it to be around $300-$400. If the job you can get after you get out of grad school will cover that extra expense then I say go for it.

I wish I could...it's a program related to Media Studies and I haven't found any other schools that has a program such as this one. I still have to get accepted into the program...I find out the first week in Dec.
