need advice about doing own makeup
In the past 6 months I have had 4 makeup trials. I've purchased about $600 worth of makeup from the trials and I have practiced doing my own makeup. I have worked hard to figure out what colors and brands work the best. I still put it on a little lighter than most of the makeup artists, and even if I try, I just have a light touch and it's not as heavy or cakey. Even though it looks like less, I can get it to last through the night. Am I crazy to do my own makeup? I don't want to look back and think I looked too plain.
Some of the artists I had trials with are still available for my day next week.

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
I think it is really up to you. If you think you can do it then go for it. I would do my makeup and maybe take pictures in different lighting (outside, inside during the day, inside at night, etc.) and see what I think about the pictures. Me-I cant do my own make-up for the wedding, my make up never lasts longer then a couple of hours
If you are comfortable doing it then go for it!

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
Did you have a trial with Jillian from Gorgeous Faces?
Your fear of looking "cakey" was mine too. I had my one and only trial with her and booked her on the spot. she uses mineral makeup and it is so light you don't even know you're wearing any.
I hardly wear makeup on a daily basis and went to her house with a picture of a very natural look and she duplicated it perfectly!

Kerie-I'm sure you will do a good job, but take it from me-you will be musshug (sp) that day. Get it done and put your mind at ease.

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
I may differ from everyone else, but I feel that if you have the makeup and you're pretty skilled at applying it, then go for it and do it yourself. If you have the same makeup that is used by professional makeup artists, it should last as long as if they did it. There has to be a reason why you haven't yet booked someone, maybe because in the back of your head you feel confident enough to do it yourself...

I just wanted to add that although you should ultimately do what is good for you, keep in mind that under lights and with pictures your make-up will look different. A good make-up person will know how colors and shades photograph.

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
I had a friend do my makeup who is not a makeup artist and I don't regret it at all. The few times I did have it done professionally, I didn't like it and I couldn't see spending the money on it, especially if it wasn't what I wanted. She did a great job and my photos came out fine.
I think it is a personal choice. I would have considered doing it myself if I had the experience to do so, but I don't normally wear much makeup. I wasn't really that nervous the morning of the wedding, but everyone is different. If you think you can do a good job and won't be a nervous wreck, go for it!

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
My friend did hers herself and it looked beautiful! Just remember to go heavy on the eyes and a little heavy on the blush. Apricot or a dark peach blush and a darker eye shadow looks great on brides, like plum, purple, dark pink, mauve and so on. Also, make sure, you put foundation on your neck as well, that way your face and neck aren't two different colors and blend it well. I used to be a makeup artist and those are some of the key things.
I was going to do my own, but I thought I would be a nervous reck and I totally wasn't! I had a friend who was very good at doing make up do it. All I had to do was buy her a little gift as a thank you. I couldn't see spending $65.00 on makeup for my wedding day!

I am musshug every day--
I took pictures last night after another trial and compared them to my bachelorette party pictures--where I did my own makeup. I like the way it looked for the bach. party.

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
I think that if you are happy with your results.. then go for it... but I agree with Blue-ize. Just consider what it will look like in the pictures and lighting and what-not... its just good to keep in mind!! GOOD LUCK!

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
I too had 4 trials and no one got it 100% the way that I wanted it.
I know I do an ok job normally and I could probably do my own the day of, but do I really want to? I also was advised that with pictures, even though you might not want to, you should wear a little bit more because of pictures.
I've had a hard time trying to figure out what to do as well. I don't want to keep buying products from the counters at the dept. stores either.
It's frustrating.

Re: need advice about doing own makeup
im a different kind of bride i like simple things. i am going to do my own make up because a) money and b) i hate the caked on look. actually i never even where foundation on my face, whenever i have i hate it. i say do it yourself if you like the way you do it!
